Like any Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery, this site will move you, maybe to tears. The resting place of over 7000 allied combatants in a beautiful and serene setting. There is no recommended time to spend here, no rush, they who remain here have all the time in the world.

I visited as I was researching the story of Dambuster Squadron Leader Henry Maudslay, one of the Royal Air Force 617 Squadron Lancasters that was lost on the night of 16/17 May 1943. To finish at his grave, where he lies with his crew (there is no room for discrimination in these sites) made my visit even more vivid, and inevitably sad too.

Very nice with young children it has a friendly atmoshere. Its not so big and the animals can be fed whitch is great fun for the little ones. Don't expect a zoo with elephants, monkeys etc.but more approachable species like f.i. goats, donkeys, camels and sealions. Nice playground and everything is very affordable (snacks, animal food, entry, etc.). Good choise for a couple of hours without going broke.

This beautiful historic garden from 17th century in Baroque style is located near the Zoo of Kleve at the hilly area Springenberg and framed on both sides by wood. The Amphitheater form is the most eye-catching. A statue of Pallas Athene is in the middle of the garden and behind the statue there is a small round temple and up there on the top is an obelisk. We parked the car at the zoo parking area and took five minutes walk to this garden. It's worth a visit.

The original church was a Romanesque three-aisled basilica. After the relocation of the Mariastift to Cleves, the new Gothic construction started in 1341, which lasted until the end of the 14th century.
During the Second World War, the centuries-old church was completely destroyed by bombing.
In the 50s and 60s of the last century the church was rebuilt, for the time being without the tower front.
Particularly worth seeing are the restored Marial altar and the Altar of the Cross in the right side aisle

This fountain and its somewhat grotesque group of statues certainly catch the eye, not least because they're located in the middle of a shopping area. I'm acquainted with the story of Lohengrin and Elsa von Brabant through Wagner's opera, though many years have passed since I attended a performance of it. That the swan is tearing at Lohengrin's trousers is a cute touch. A nice piece of public art!

An empty space where once the synagogue stood. As many other places of Jewish worship in Germany the Klever synagogue was demolished in 1938 during the Nazi orchestrated Kristallnacht. The reason the Jewish community in Cleves was rather small (200 in 1933) was a result of a deliberate Prussian policy to keep their numbers low and economic benefits high. Many Jewish Germans did not get residence permits (Bleiberecht). Only Jewish citizens with special skills often in the financial domain got privileges and protection of the ruler. After the Hohenzollern dynasty collapsed at the end of WOI, the position of the Jews in Cleves traditionally close to the Schwanenburg became more vulnerable. Many left after Hitler came to power, the ones who stayed behind -over 50 in number- were brutally murdered.

The castle self was not open for the public. But for € 3.00 we could climb the tower and see the geological museum exposition in the tower self. By the reception we could see a small piece excavations of the basement and also outside the building ( through the glass).

The building was an old spa: the outside is still old but the inside is modern and well equiped for showing (modern) art. However some areas (staircases, old wall decorations and ceiling of a room) brings you back to the times of Bad Cleve. Also you can find here the old atelier of the artist Joseph Beuys (1921-1986). The permanent collection shows nice works of the sculptor Ewald Mataré (1887-1965). Regularly there are special exhibitions of contemporary art.

I was surprised to found here the statue of Pallas Athene by Artus Quellinus de Oudere (1660) being an old gift of the city of Amsterdam.

A beautifully presented collection of Koekoek’s work from his early days till late in his career. The museum itself is his former house which is also beautifully restored. Highly recommended!

We hike and bike often in this forest. The landscape is partially quite hilly and overgrown with coniferous and deciduous forests. There is a wide variety of game in the forest such as red deer, roe deer, fallow deer, wild pigs, hazel worms, birds of prey, etc. a paradise for hikers, bikers and nature lovers. The forest measures about 55 square kilometres, at the south side bordered by the river Niers and at the North side by the interesting town Kleve.

That was our first reaction. It is different than any other war cemetery. The layout, the structure, the group of three cross stones, the names of the dead on the ground and the (kind of) old Maya temple in the middle of the cemetery. It feels there is something mythical about it. The location of this site is a bit isolated in a green area.
