We were lucky enough to fall on this market by accident (Market days are Wednesday and Saturday). It is an extensive, bustling market groaning with top-notch produce. Do go if you get the chance!

We were looking forward to visiting the fish-market in Vannes (‘Halles aux poissons’ in French) because we love old market halls. Due to bad planning, we arrived on a Thursday just before 1 p.m. and all the stands were closed. Not a single fish in sight. It turned out the market days were Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday (7 a.m. to 1 p.m.).

Fortunately, the building was open and we could have a peek inside and take some pictures. The granite and steel hall dates from the 1880s. It’s nice but not spectacular. It was designed by architect E. de Lamarzelle about whom we were unable to find any information.

We visited Vannes and I had seen the reviews on tripadvisor so made a point of visiting as we love cheese. Looks like they have some sister shops in the surrounding areas too, so check out their website.

This is simply the best cheese shop we have ever seen. Over 100 varieties! Very friendly and willing to take time to advise us on our choices. Try the cheese washed in balsamic vinegar, it's brilliant.

    AMAZING !!!

While exploring the adorable neighbourhood around St Patern church (Église Saint-Patern) we stumbled upon this incredible second-hand book shop in Rue de la Fontaine. It’s chock-a-block with (seemingly?) precariously balanced piles of books and has the familiar musty smell of old paper. After some happy browsing we picked up a French crime novel to read on the train back home. Librarian Stéphane Roussel wished us to enjoy our reading and have a pleasant stay in Vannes. Not such an ogre after all.

What looked from the outside to be just another gift and souvenir shop turned out to be an exceptionally delightful experience. There is a large range of good quality stock but the ladies running the shop raised it to another level with their desire to help. In particular the young lady in charge of the upstairs floor couldn't have done more, to the point of phoning one of their suppliers to put in a special order (names on bowls) for us to collect directly from the pottery. A big thank you and highly recommended.

Lovely shop but beware when buying earrings - the price is for the individual earring and NOT the pair. I got caught out by finding a lovely pair for 25 euros (or so I thought), only to be told that this was the price for the individual earring and not the pair.... Cost me 50 euros instead of 25.......!
