Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The queues when we first went to go on it, had about 300 people in it. Given the number 28 which is the most popular tram only has seats for 20, we decided to get up early one morning and get the one at 7am when we could get a seat and our view would not be blocked by people standing.

The cable car connects the Vasco de Gama tower and the Oceanarium. The views from the cable car are very pretty and it's a nice ride between the attractions

Walking down the hill was trecherous with Portuguese cobblestones and the rain so I thought I should do this tram. 5 minutes exercise for 4 Euro may not be the greatest use of your money, but it is safe, if nothing else. Partof the Liboa Crad if your purchase one.

Conveniently located about a 7 minute walk from Time Out Market, Elevador Da Bica is a good spot to walk off all the food you ate. If you do plan to go to the market, I'd recommend combining the two in one trip since the elevador is not that close to the city centre. The yellow funicular is the most popular one in Lisbon because of the steep hills. Unfortunately, it wasn't running when we came by on a Saturday at around 2:30. Maybe it only runs on weekdays? Regardless of that fact, it's a cool place for some photo ops. This is where you see all of those Lisbon shots on Instagram. We didn't walk up the entire hill but it was a sight to see. We didn't have time to come back another day to see if the tram was running since our time in Lisbon was limited, but if this is a must-see for you, just be sure to budget enough time on your trip. You never know when it may be randomly closed.

We boarded the 12E tram in Baixa, paid the three euro per person cash on board, and had a wonderful ride through the hills of Lisbon. we did not experience any pick pocketers, found seats, and loved our roughly 20 minute journey from Baixa to the end of the line. There, we took an Uber back to our apartment near the river, because the line was super long to return.

Lisbon, at least the central part is a fairly compact city. This meant that as our hotel was pretty centrally located itself meant many of the attractions, we wanted to see were a reasonable walk away. The same could be said for restaurants, shopping and other things we needed to do during our stay there. However, its also a very hilly city and while a stroll downhill to see the sights is pleasurable the same journey uphill back to the hotel at the end of the day isn’t.

Fortunately, there is the Lisbon Metro, the subway system that we availed ourselves of on an almost daily basis.

The Metro was initially envisioned in the late 29th Century built during just after the Second World War when Portugal which remained neutral experienced an economic boom and opened in 1959. It consists of four lines (Blue, Red, Yellow, and Green) and it’s 44.5 kilometres and 56 stations cover most of the city and some suburban areas, including stops at the major railway stations and the International Airport. It is a part of and connected with the rest of the Lisbon and area transit system, buses, trams, ferries and commuter trains.

Trains were for the most part fairly frequent and we never waited more than 5-10 minutes for one. Service runs daily from 6:30 am until 1:00am. As this is primarily a transit system for locals there are of course both morning and evening rush hours and one should try and avoid using it at this time if at all possible. Aside from time this we found the trains not overtly crowded and fairly easy to get a seat.

Using it was actually quite simple. The stations are well marked with signage and maps showing the routes. Google Maps was also helpful in trip planning if needed. One tip was to use the nearest Metro station, in our case Parque on the Blue Line) rather than our hotel as this ensured the entire trip was planned on the Metro rather than above ground buses. The website in addition to providing fare info and trip planning also has up to date info on delays and line closures. I did notice some construction which would suggest some possible future expansion.

Fares were more than reasonable with a single fare costing only 1.65 Euro, and less if purchasing one of the various options of multiple use passes. These can be purchased from kiosks prominently located near the station entrances and with instructions in English and Portuguese. They operate on both bank cards and cash.

There are various options for payment. As we already had booked tours, we opted against getting the Lisbon Card which includes discounts for attractions. We purchased reloadable navegante cards which worked on both the Metro and Trams. As we weren’t sure how often we’d be using it nor sure we’d be using it every day we just got in the habit of adding one or two trips every time we were in a station from the easy-to-use kiosks. I actually think we overestimated our trips needed and came back with a couple on the cards.

There are warning signs regarding pickpockets and thefts throughout the system but normal precautions such as be aware of your surroundings and keep phones ash and other valuables secured in pockets should minimize the chances of this.
In addition to be safe we also found both the stations and trains very clean. A nice change from those in our hometown sadly.

There is free WIFI in the Metro system but due to the fact some lines and stations are very deep underground due to the hilly nature of the city you may find blind spots. The deepness of some of these stations also necessitates a very long escalator journey to the surface.

One of the things we notices was several of the stations are decorated with various artwork. For example, Parque Station on the Blue Line the nearest to our hotel had art work than represented Portugal’s long history of sea exploration.

Save your legs and use the funicular to get up the steep hills. Short ride, but well worth it. Recommended.

My friends and I arrived on an overnight flight into Lisbon and Hugo was waiting for us. He is such a delightful and professional person who took us around the city, dropping us off so we could take our photos then picking us again and again. He had so much knowledge to share with us throughout the day and evening. His car is immaculate, he provided water and from the moment we met he felt like an old friend. He is easy to reach via WhatsApp at +351-967-633-573. Don’t hesitate to book your driving tour with Hugo!

We hit the jackpot when Margarida picked us up from the beach restaurant on our first night in Lisbon. We got to chatting as she pointed out sights on our way back into the city to our hotel. The next day she toured us through Sintra and took us to Pena Palace...she put her photography skills to work and got some great pics of us (not everything can be a selfie!). Her knowledge and interest was amazing and we had the best time and tried some authentic food! We both recommend her to anyone who needs driving/tour services. Thank you, Margarida. You made our Lisbon trip amazing. Love, Russ and Kevin.

If you want to take a ferry across the river, this is a logical ferry location with very frequent service. it hooks up to the Metro, so there are lots of people making the change. Very busy place with some food and services. Short trip across the river.

We did a 4-day trip to Portugal with my brother and sister-in-law. We stayed in Cascais, but we decided to do a quick half-a-day also in Lisbon. We had a wonderful 2-hour tour with ElectricTuk guide, Catarina Marcāo. She was very personable and in a short time told us a lot of history. The views were amazing from the locations she showed us. We feel very lucky to have had Catarina; she treated us as friends and had a good sense of humor! She also took many photos of us, and her energetic attitude was super fun! As we drove around she introduced us to the traditional Portuguese Fado music, too. She made us feel very welcomed as visitors in Portugal.
