Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- Michael HMartock, UK598 contributionsWe only did the train journey having arrived at Medemblik on a river cruise. We did see the Friesland and it was an interesting contrast with the modern river cruise ship. It looked fun! After a coach trip to Hoorn we had time to look around the museum before boarding the train, pulled by a steam engine. The carriages are authentic and lack just a little in seat comfort. All part of the experience. There is a twenty minute stop to review information at a station en route. Pleasant journey to Medemblik with a good view of the windmill as you arrive.Written 11 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Ingrid MGeervliet, The Netherlands382 contributionsLoved it !! All the oh's and ah's when recognising things from years gone by......"my gran used that, I had one if those as a teenager, my dad drove one of them" Such fun.
When in (the area of) Hoorn you should really go and see it 😊Written 18 September 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Right now, there is a temporary exhibit of over 200 etchings by Rembrandt.
There is a nominal entry fee, but it is well worth it to see these works. It is a unique opportunity because all the etchings are owned by one person. If you get a chance to go to this show I urge you to do so.
There is an online audio guide. I usually hate that, but I did get it to work, and it was very helpful in describing and giving background on some works.
It was obvious that the buildings needed repair. The work is expected to take four years according to a clerk at the museum.
There are restrooms and a small gift shop.Written 12 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We waited an hour for our starters, while the female server, clearly annoyed with the kitchen, provided us with bread to satisfy our hunger. Once the food arrived it was very good and the kitchen was back in control. Main course and dessert arrived more promptly.Written 16 June 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Solodam JAmsterdam, The Netherlands34,927 contributionsThere was a street music festival on Saturday and when I saw the church was open, I didn't think twice to go inside. It's a big church with stained glass windows and a dome. It has beautiful wooden ceilingWritten 3 July 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Robert ORotterdam, The Netherlands5,740 contributionsThe "Varend Erfgoed" museum is located southeast of the historic center at what is called Oostereiland (Easter island). This part of the harbour area was developed during the mid 1600s. The museum is run by motivated sail enthusiasts and serves not only tourists, but also is a place where restoration and maintenance of historic vessels is undertaken. There are very many different types of boats to be admired.Written 23 September 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - wildeatersGosport, UK21 contributionsThis lovingly restored C17 merchant's house is a must-see. The friendly stewards give you personal attention and everything is hands-on. You can open the cupboards and lie on the beds! They even made us delicious tea in genuine 400 year old Delft teacups! We LOVED it and learned a lot about the Dutch Golden Age in this atmospheric place.Written 30 October 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jack KRamat Hasharon, Israel383 contributionsAlthough it was windy and a typical Dutch drizzle rain was coming down, we decided to make a stroll through the park. We were not disappointed! Beautiful views of the harbor of Hoorn and the Ijsselmeer (the former Southern Sea, part of the North Sea). There were even deer to see!!
Will certainly come back in the summer...Written 7 January 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. A bit sober, but worth your time.Written 10 June 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Robert ORotterdam, The Netherlands5,740 contributionsBuilt in 1883 during a time when the building of railways were seen as the ultimate new organisation of mobility. For this reason perhaps the exuberant style, the formidable size and central location of the station. Nowadays, the feel of the place is a bit low key. The station is functional with automated gates and ticket boots. No staff. Make sure you have an OV-chip card before you travel.Written 18 September 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Robert ORotterdam, The Netherlands5,740 contributionsLocated at the eastern periphery of the old town, the Oosterpoort is still a robust structure. It is the only historic gate left in Hoorn. The Renaissance style building escaped demolition during the 1870s because the gate keeper living on top could not find alternative accommodation. Remarkable they built the gatekeepers house on top of the gate in 1601 never anticipating it would save the structure.Written 20 September 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Solodam JAmsterdam, The Netherlands34,927 contributionsThe three houses on the "Slaperhaven" have facade with images of ships. Those images told an age-old story about the battle on the Zuiderzee (South sea) in october 11, 1573. And.... that's it as we couldn't visit the houses.Written 18 January 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
