Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Extremely busy - get there early so you can see. Lovely to see the tradition of the cheese market. A beautiful town to visit.

I'd been critical of two large churches in Amsterdam the previous day and as I walked into this church I had the same initial impression looking at some of the photographs posted near the entrance. However, going further in I realised that this is a grand church.

The ceilings are magnificently high and have some nice decorations. The organ is enormous too. They had some beautiful music being played through their speakers which set a lovely calmness over the church.

Unlike Amsterdam, there were no entrance fees to come in here.

One always worries about weight (airline restrictions), transit damages (Packing) number of gifts and total cost. This shop takes care of all worries, maximum number of a wide array of gifts, light weight, good individual packaging and reasonable cost. Also, one can get rid of change in purses, to reduce weight..!

I love exploring the hidden hofjes in Dutch cities, they take you away from the crowds and provide some peace and quiet. Wildemanshofje is no different, situated close to the centre of Alkmaar, you feel as though you are miles away in the middle of nowhere. The quaint houses and pretty gardens are always beautifully maintained.

Do bear in mind that people still live here, so we were advised not to walk in front of the houses, but walk in the garden instead.

The Kissing Cheese Girl statue, located near the Waagplein, dressed in traditional costume, the statue celebrates the rich history of Alkmaar and its famous cheese culture.

Even on the busiest day it is fairly easy to get your picture with the statue.

Ww walked one of the many routes through the neighboring fields and meadows (cows considered us an attraction and followed us) and along ditches and barbed wire which in the end turned into a 10 mile walk. The last mile and a half covered more rural territory and had us walk past the windmill. Luckily there was a bench and a blue sky. What a lovely sight it was. From below it is huge and it looks very well maintained. It's still in use and people still live in it.

The northeast wing of the building at Langestraat maybe from 1520, but the facade is late 19th century. The tower as well underwent significant changes (the upper part was added). Still overall it is an attractive almost festive building.

Alkmaarder Hout offers large mature beech and oak trees around a dear-enclosure and aviary. The first trees were planted in 1607 and were replaced over the centuries.L.A Springer designed the current park between the old centre of Alkmaar and the woodland"Bos van Heiloo".Both the Alkmaar cemetery and the MCA Alkmaar Hospital are situated inside the large park causing a considerable amount of visitors.Ienjoyed the first crocusses of spring in february.

Whereas the days of fish gutting, cleaning and selling have long gone, the building work here still allows you to imagine how it was. Now, it is a lively area with several very good restaurants and bars.

It was interesting to learn that this building was moved to this location from it's original place. We always love to see historical landmarks in the places we visit in Europe and to realize how old this building was and to see it's beautiful condition is astounding to us.

Located just across the canal from the cheese market and opposite the start of the Red light street you will find this historical location. It is the green building with a cannon ball on the top left corner shot during the Spanish attack in 1573. The building has a very interesting construction on with higher levels over hanging the next layer down. This construction was to minimise the impact of rainfall and snow.

We called into the coffee shop here twice at lunchtime while staying in Alkmaar, and sampled the toasties, a nice calm place to relax for a while. Friendly and helpful service.

This lovely windmill is open to the public for tours, a nice cup of organic tea or coffee, and tasty cakes. The welcome is warm and friendly. In the shop you can buy freshly milled organic flours, herbs and spices and other delicious products!

Nice church in center of Alkmaar, nothing spectacular but worthwhile visit because its simplicity makes it an attractive place to visit, sit down, and relax. When visiting Alkmaar certainly worth a small detour.
