La Piazza Duomo
#2 of 73 Sights & Landmarks in Syracuse
Surrounded by architectural beauty from several churches and just the local buildings that weave into the piazza, this grand space is sure to be one you traverse if you are visiting the sights in Ortigia...great p...
Wide and beautifully lit at night which gave it a peaceful atmosphere and the view of the Duomo while standing in the piazza was magnificent.
Chiesa di San Filippo Apostolo
#3 of 73 Sights & Landmarks in Syracuse
She took us further down some stairs to see the Mikwah, or ritual bath, that shows the site was also used as a synagogue in former times.
Very interesting hidden site
Syracuse Cathedral
#4 of 73 Sights & Landmarks in Syracuse
While at the Piazza Duomo be sure to visit the church of Santa Lucia alla Badia to view the exquisite Caravaggio painting the "Burial of St. Lucy".
Situated in Piazza Duomo on the island of Ortigia, the 5th century BC Greek temple dedicated to the Goddess Athena, became the site of today's Cathedral with its striking Baroque facade.

A fantastic archaeological site
Greek Theater
#8 of 73 Sights & Landmarks in Syracuse
Surrounded by nature and offering great views of the surrounding areas, this is definitely a relaxing spot to rest, have a quick lunch (bring your own snacks) and absorb the history!
... very good preserved; Syracuse was a great town with a glorious past; the accoustic was excellent in the theatre still at this time, and the site was serene and quite, it was very hot, the visit was very nice.

Fountain of Diana
#9 of 73 Sights & Landmarks in Syracuse
The Fountain of Diana in the Piazza Archimede gives excellent views down the Corso Matteotti to the harbour - this being full of exclusive shops.
The Fountain is wonderful and you can seat in a cafe opposite and enjoy the view.
Ipogeo di Piazza Duomo
#10 of 73 Sights & Landmarks in Syracuse
Really enjoyed this very interesting site/ attraction.
Basilica Santa Lucia al Sepolcro
#11 of 73 Sights & Landmarks in Syracuse
Connected to the church is the octagonal Chiesa del Sepolcro, a basilica built as a burial site of Saint Lucia.
The kairos leaflet picked up from any of these sites or the tiny eleventh century church at the entrance to neapolis will give you a discount to these.
Fonte Aretusa
#12 of 73 Sights & Landmarks in Syracuse
Every tourist visiting Ortigia will gravitate to this remarkable and beautiful site.
It is a beautiful place in a beautiful city with a beautiful sea view.

Lovely site and tour
Latomie dei Cappuccini
#14 of 73 Sights & Landmarks in Syracuse
Latomie dei Cappuccini is one of the twelve ancient stone quarries in Siracusa and was my favourite site in the city.
For me this was a great tonic to the hectic running around seeing the other wonderful sites in Syracuse and Ortigia.
Temple of Apollo (Tempio di Apollo)
#15 of 73 Sights & Landmarks in Syracuse
One of the first things you see on the island and a great site.
Lots of commercial junk around it, but the sites are still breathtaking.

Maniace Castle
#16 of 73 Sights & Landmarks in Syracuse
It was beautifully unspoilt at the present time and we were able to freely wander around the battlements looking at the views out to sea and back inland.
Interesting small museum explaining the history of the site as well as artifacts that were found over the centuries.
Santuario Madonna delle Lacrime
#17 of 73 Sights & Landmarks in Syracuse
This tear shaped church dedicated to a weeping image of the Virgin Mary is a very useful landmark in the city.
You will often see it no mater where you are in Siracusa so it makes a great landmark and you will constantly be curious to know what it is.....so make a visit.

Casa Bianca Mikvah
#19 of 73 Sights & Landmarks in Syracuse
It is an honour and very humbling experience visiting these sacred baths with their sad history, this was one of the favourite sites in Siracusa.
A beautiful site and highlight of visiting Ortigia and a link to finding the synagogue too.
Latomia del Paradiso
#20 of 73 Sights & Landmarks in Syracuse
A nice walk through shady spaces with trees and views of the magnificent area with spires, caves and tunnels.

San Giovanni Evangelista
#21 of 73 Sights & Landmarks in Syracuse
From the white exterior of the roofless Norman church (built on a Greek temple) to the Catacombs of Marciano, this is a site of outstanding interest.
Anfiteatro Romano
#22 of 73 Sights & Landmarks in Syracuse
The Greek Ampitheatre which is situated in the same Archaeological site is better preserved than the Roman Ampitheatre - but the size of the theatre is enormous.
In England sites like these would be enshrined in purpose built buildings but there is so much here it would be too expensive.
Eurialo Castle
#23 of 73 Sights & Landmarks in Syracuse
The Castle is spread out over some considerable area on the top of a hill overlooking Siracuse and consequently has some remarkable views of the city and the sea beyond.
