Avignon is not only known for its incomplete bridge and the song "Sur le pont d'Avignon". The location of the Catholic Church papal offices have not always been in Rome. In early times the location of the papal offices were contested. For a period of time (1305 to 1429) 9 popes resided and conducted their business from he Palais des Papes in Avignon. This site is worth a visit and it is preferable to get a guided tour to get a detailed overview of the site.

Of course a visit to Avignon is not complete without a walk on the famous Pont d'Avignon which is a short walk from the Palais des Papes.

Our favorite spot in Avignon. Located next to and just above the Palace des Papes, the gardens offer a great view of the countryside and city, pleasant walkways, and a nice casual dining spot for refreshments. A very tranquil oasis.

Great story behind this bridge and why it was built. It is easily seen from the street. You can also go on the bridge and pay a fee so you can go out and dance on the bridge. Yes I said dance as it is done all the time and there is a story behind that as well. Read up on the history before you go!

Clean- bright- not too many fresh food items you can't find here

Even if you buy nothing- it is fun to wander around and drool.

I only had time to see Botticelli's 4 paintings in Room 10. Rushed for time, I asked one of the gallery assistants to show me where Room 10 was and she took me there directly which was so appreciated! This room would not have been too easily found by myself and I would have been distracted by all of the other beautiful paintings in the art gallery. Botticelli's paintings were small, not wall sized. One could get very close up to view these paintings. I could see his outline of the figures which were then filled in, the facial detail, brush strokes on the garments. There were 2 of his Madonna and Child paintings on the wall. This art gallery is free so definitely worthwhile for just a short visit for tourists with limited time in Avignon. This art gallery is located at the end of the square - Place de Palace - with the entrance on the square.

Peaceful with a nativity setting of awaiting the Christ child. Interesting church, worth visiting. Gothic, constructed in 1358. Carved wooden doors.

We hailed a free Baladine (milk float/Popemobile like bus for 6) which took us here as it was the other side of town from the main tourist attractions as we had already walked miles. This ancient street winds with huge plane trees breaking up the ancient stone walk, along a river with waterwheels or skeletons of them, right along where they used to tan leather. There are charming wonky houses all along and little bridges across to various chapels and a synagogue. When we were there, we were charmed by the church-like silence, the welcome shade and the interesting carved stones and benches along the way. It's not long but it's an oasis of peace in a tourist mecca. Don't tell anyone.

A spacious palace on Rue Vernet, with an eclectic mix of imitation Roman statues, impressionist paintings (including a nice Sisley), an Egyptian collection )sarcophagi, papyruses, ushabti figurines, pickled animal organs in jars). The main part is the collection of huge classicist tableaus which are well worth seeing - depicting a world that never was but which all Europeans secretly yearn for). The museum is not a must, unless you care about art.

I stayed on the outskirts of Avignon, using it as a base for the Luberon hilltop towns one day and Pont du Gard/St. Remy/Arles the next. I had vaguely thought maybe I'd explore Avignon proper, too. But when I glimpsed these amazingly preserved ramparts I knew I had to devote a good chunk of time to Avignon as well! I cut my second day's itinerary short to explore Avignon, and it was totally worth it. The walls are amazing, beautiful and so well preserved. They look like the kind of castle walls every kid imagines. I felt like I was back in medieval times, truly! I strolled along a section of them, then explored the city center- also beautiful- and ended up sipping amazing local muscato and eating ratatouille at the foot of the Palais des Papes. A truly beautiful city!

A nice private collection with some tasty pieces. We visited in August and it was fun to commune with the Modigliani in the lower level. Met some folks in Six a week or two later and the portrait had gone on tour!
