What travellers are saying
- Philip CYork, ME598 contributionsThis is truly a unique site - ancient, well preserved, and .....unexplained. We walked around and about and then visited the museum. Probably would have been better to visit the museum first although it offers little in the way of explanation. It's a mystery!Written 29 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Celia TCompton Dundon, UK22 contributionsThis man made hill/tomb now with a more recent chapel on top would have had a wonderful view of the Megaliths before the recent tree plantations developed. It was difficult to appreciate the historic landscape and the tomb and chapel are no longer open, but the view is worth a visit and does give some perspective with imagination.Written 6 March 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Dean1 contributionI've never been there, but I wanted to leave a note about how this place works.
The first photo in the list is not the very male Giant of Manio, but the rather female Entrance to the Quad of Manio. At sunrise on the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year, the shadow of the Giant falls on the Entrance. That's the signal for the party to begin. Nine months later, the sun rises due East, and the shadow falls one the Dame of Manio, a stone that looks like pregnant woman, and baby is born.
The Giant, Entrance and Dame form an exact 3/4/5 triangle, with GE 50 meters, D 40 meters due west of G, and E 30 meters due north of D. The math problem is to determine the latitude where the shadow at sunrise is in the direction of the hypotenuse on the winter solstice. Given the simplifying assumptions needed to solve this, the computed latitude is not that of Carnac, France, the megalith's location.Written 23 May 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - DavidC856Alloa, UK696 contributionsThis chapel says that it is open every day. We arrived on foot, round the coast, and spent a few minutes looking around. It is a lovely example of a village chapel, complete with statue of the Saint.Written 19 February 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - hans-jaguarSanta Comba Dao, Portugal22,328 contributionsOn our visit of Carnac, we also have been visiting the "Eglise Saint Cornély", the pediment of the west façade has a niche that houses a statue of Cornely.
The portico of the north facade was carved by Kergoustin, de Baud, and dates from the year 1792; it is a Doric architecture with columns on the scalloped sides, it is surmounted by a baldachin with fins, a crown and a cross.
The bell tower, 40 m high, dates from the year 1639. The vaults of the naves are with paintings that relate to the life of Cornély; they are made by Le Corre de Pontivy, but signed by Dupont. Those in the Chapel of the Rosary and the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament date back to the year 1732 thanks to a sum of 500 pounds paid to "Dupont". The choir is surrounded by a wrought iron gate. Mice small town and cerrtainly worth a visith.Written 5 September 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Signs all in French. The English audio guide misses out some of the exhibits.
It could be better set out but limited by the constraints of a historic building.Written 7 August 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. There is parking all along with good width spaces. The whole This area has been carefully rebuilt with wide, well surfaced paths seating, good cafes, and many easy access conveniences. The beach is gently sloping and relatively easy walking without any rocks. An ideal safe place for a seaside walk for elderly and less agile visitors as well as a great place for children on a safe beachWritten 13 October 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Mira VSmarje Pri Jelsah, Slovenia347 contributionsThe visitors' centre is located right next to one of the largest fields with megaliths, the so called Menec alignment. It is a modern round building with lots of books and all kinds of information about the Carnac stones. They also sell souveniers, but there is not much choice. And there is a machine where you can make yourself a medal with megaliths. I was only disappointed at the fact that most of the books are only in French. There are only a few English translations. But you will probably find one that you like. I did, too.
A practical advice: do not look for the toilets at the centre. They are in a separate building in the vicinity and they are surprisingly clean.Written 14 August 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. There’s lots of shaded areas and a mixture of equipment for children. On street parking is east and the park is very well maintained.Written 6 June 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Louise BNorthamptonshire, UK10 contributionsWe had a lovely walk through the woods and I was given ottilo to ride, he was their biggest horse. He was steady and a great experience to be up higher as I'm quite small and often on much smaller ponies. The owners are very friendly, speak good English and obviously care for their horses and riders of all levels including disabilities.Written 2 August 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
