Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

After being open for a year I was expecting a much better experience as assume all the little things would have been taken care of by now.
In a crowded golf market for Bordeaux I can’t tell if Villenave-D’Ornon is looking to attract members or planning to install itself as a business destination with pay-and-play golfers as its target.

Locating the course was difficult as some satnavs still don’t have it on them and signage from the roads was poor for a new destination.

The setting is lovely and the clubhouse is very charming sitting out over the lake.

The driving range is a water based range with both covered mat and open grass areas available.

The changing areas are poor. Very small and with minimal locker space to leave shoes, handbags etc while you play. The changing area opens straight onto the corridor so the only option is to change in the 2 shower cubicles. These are at least quite large so there is a dry space, but as a group it may take a while to all be ready for lunch.
Toilets are a unisex space so do be careful and ensure you are aware of your modesty.

Pro shop is well stocked and the staff friendly, polite and welcoming.

The bar service first thing as there was no-one specifically covering the bar. Orders were taken by someone doing paperwork in the bar and it seemed a chore for them to keep being interrupted for drinks and snacks and if they were on the phone then customers couldn’t get served at all.
We ordered sandwiches 25 minutes before our tee time to take out on the course. We had to chase twice and only just made our start time.

The course has some nice holes and I would say the last 4-5 holes are a strong finish if played to there full potential.

On our visit the course presentation was poor.
The tees of the day were so far forward the men basically played a combination of blue and Red tee distance as the yellow tees were so far forward. The low handicap lady in our group played from the yellow tees in some cases as the blue and red tees were often in advance of the tee boxes on the fairway.
There are currently few signs/pictures on the tee showing the shape of the hole or hazards. The posts are in place but the placards missing. When no course guides are available it means you are playing blind from some tees and devoid of any distance support.
Some holes had what looked like yardage markers in the fairway, but no correlating index on the card to tell you what colour was what yardage or if to entrance or centre of the green. Only a few holes had a 135metre/150yard marker on the side of the fairways.
The cups had not been cut and placed properly. Several cups were set too deep (if using a tapered flag stick as Villenave do, the the hole is restricted as the fatter part of the flag is blocking the hole). The cup liners were not sitting on the cups but were at the top of the hole. At best this reduces the size of the hole again and at worst (as several were) they sit above the hole and deflect the ball from going in. This is a basic greenkeeping function and very poor to be so badly delivered.

Still has plenty of potential but with other options within easy reach of Bordeaux there is work to do.

Probably won’t come back this season but may try again in 2020.

Don’t do the Lake course. Terrible conditions in the fairways due to very dry conditions. Public course that is just not well maintained. However, if you are an American and want to have an experience with playing with locals, this is your chance. Otherwise, pay more and go to Médoc.

We booked a session here via groupon. It was a game of crazy golf/pitch and putt combined with a 300g steak dinner thrown in. The place is spotless and great fun. The course is all astroturf and a real test. We also hit a few buckets of balls in the driving range area at 2 Euro a bucket of about 20. Toilets and shower available and a decent bar for drinks. The steak was fantastic the service great and we will definately go back.
