- CarrieMadera, CA36 contributionsStopped in as we were intrigued by the Iris pictures we have seen. We were greeted by a lovely lady who explained the process and pricing. We were in! I’m about 15 minutes my husband and I had pictures done of our iris’ which is totally easy - same sort of machine you look into at a ophthalmology appointment. They will show you the preview and print for you at the shop. Prices are very reasonable, to include a nice frame for 25€. Out the door we spent about 80€ but have a really interesting and personalized picture to bring home. - alexofsbSanta Barbara, CA174 contributionsWe were in Bordeaux last year and part of our adventures in Europe since many years has been to find a painting or two to add to our collection. We expected more Galleries in this sized city, but were surprised at how few there were. However, we found Galerie Valerie Peter in a classy part of Bordeaux near some museums where a few streets do have some galleries. We visited them all, but found the art in her gallery to be more eclectic, original, not full of oversized large works and not directed to the tourist. We are from California and found the prices also very reasonable, ending up with two paintings we love.
I was a little apprehensive about shipping from there, but Valerie handled everything with her shipper. The paintings arrived very quickly and in perfect order including one that had framed glass. Everything was extremely well packaged, proper importation docs and all correspondence was handled efficiently. - mrsagfwashington dc845 contributionsMy best souvenir of Bordeaux was a lovely reproduction watercolor of an iconic Bordeaux streetscape. The artist, Jean-Luc Helin, sold it to me at his store, which offers many other streetscapes, water views, landscapes and views of vineyards, in different sizes and at very reasonable prices, as reproductions of his original works. The store is open 2-7pm, Tues.-Sat.
Aquarelles de Bordeaux, at 32 Rue Bouffard, is on a four block pedestrianized street known for collectibles. This same back street is where the Museum of Decorative Arts/Musee des Arts Decoratifs is at #39, and the excellent cafe Cote Cour is in its walled forecourt. (I cannot recommend Cafe Bouffard on the corner.) Out on the main drag (rue Nancel-Penard, which ends in Place Gambetta), there is an official city sign that is an arrow reading Les Antiquaries de la Rue Bouffard. On July 12 I tried to view the exhibition of the Chinese architect Wang Shu at the Centre for Architecture Arc en Reve. I arrived 35 minutes before the normal evening closure of the centre at 18.00. The lady at the teller said to the women in the queue in front of me, that she would finish to sell tickets in two minutes time. A minute later it was my turn. I asked if I could see the exhibition at the time of the lecture of Wang Shu the same evening at 18.30, if not I would like to see it now. She answered that the exhibition would be closed during the lecture. When I then asked for a ticket she said she would not sell me a ticket as the time of access had finished while we were - briefly - talking to each other. I pointed out that I had come from the country side to see the exhibition and to attend the lecture and that I could not wait till after the lecture for the reopening of the exhibition late in the evening because I would have to catch the last train. A shrug of shoulders was the only answer I got. I did not ask for the name of the lady, because sadly enough this rude and unflexible behaviour is the norm in French official establishments and often even in shops. Kindness and a service minded attitude are the exception.
2.Act
The museum closed at 18.00 although the lecture in the same place was schedule only 30 minutes later and the access was previewed for 18.15. This unreasonable arrangement again did not take into account the comfort of the visitors. We had first to leave and to come back 15 minutes later. Then we were kept waiting way over time in a hot and narrow corridor till the crowds that had gathered in the meantime were led upstairs and poured into the auditorium which was way to small and another narrow and hot room where cameras had been installed for a transmission of the lecture. After a lot of chaotic running to and froe of the numerous museum guards trying to accommodate the visitors and to prevent the crowd of ascending the upper floor the lecture finally began nearly 30 minutes later.
