Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- UrsosarctosUnited Kingdom784 contributionsThis is frankly a knockout. It is big and brash and beautiful, of its kind. It is also in gorgeous condition.
It’s a shame that the Place des Quinconces behind it isn’t more attractive, the big expanse of gritted public space is probably great for events, but looks underwhelming in normal dress.Written 19 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. If you come by Pont de Pierre from the right bank of Garonne river, the Porte de Bourgogne is straight ahead when leaving the bridge.Written 26 November 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Terry MHamilton, Canada4,921 contributionsThe origin of the word ‘Dijeaux’ is unclear but I like the suggestion it is based on a temple of Jupiter which once stood there in Gallo-Roman times. It opens on to the Place Gambetta. It was once known under Louis XIV as Porte Dauphine. That it was a portal rather than a section of wall has probably accounted for its survival.Written 18 November 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - simply-peregrinatingWaddington, UK2,723 contributionsYou can't miss this huge head sculpture on Place de la Comédie which oddly fits in with its surroundings. It is difficult to catch a good light on it and you must take care when photographing it as a fast road runs by.Written 21 June 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - BrucestewartLivingston, UK10,155 contributionsWe passed this statue at least twice a day during our stay in Bordeaux as it is located close to the Stalingrad tram stop which was 2 stops away from the accommodation where we were staying for our holiday in Bordeaux.
So what does it commemorate? Apparently nothing in particular, it is just a piece of contemporary art.Written 15 April 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - StephenCrossDublin, Ireland30,911 contributionsReally nice building that is close to Notre Damme. It’s a great little area slightly off the main tourist streets. Well worth a look.Written 24 May 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Debby KJerusalem, Israel307 contributionsThis is not some amazing site, it is a bust of a man in a small green area in Bordeaux. But a hero like Aristide de Sousa Mendes (google him) deserves homage, and therefore I recommend that you go, and contemplate how some people are courageous and can make a difference in the world. It is also quite near to the Musee des Beaux Arts, which is worth a visit, so go a few steps out of the way and give de Sousa Mendes the honor he deserves. I sent an edit to Google maps, so I hope that by the time you see this review it will be correctly located on the map - it is at the edge of Esplanade Charles de Gaulle.Written 3 October 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - saronicZurich, Switzerland28,818 contributionsOn Place Tourny to the west of the Esplanade de Quinconces is a - with 3.3m - larger-than-life-size bronze statue of Louis-Urbain Aubert, Marquis de Tourny. It stands on a high stone pedestal with two inscriptions and two bas-reliefs, representing 'Art et Industrie' (north) and 'Agriculture et Commerce' (south). This sculpture, erected in the year 1900 replaced a statue from 1825, made from terracotta, which had later been considered too small. Today it is stored away at the Musée d'Aquitaine.
The actual bronze sculpture was made by Gaston Veuvenot Leroux from Paris, but who mainly worked in Bordeaux, using bronze as well as stone. More works by him can be seen in the city. Here the Marquis is shown with an allonge wig and holding a plan in his left hand, while his right arm is outstretched.
The Marquis de Tourny had been sent by the king as intendant of the province of Guyenne, to which also Bordeaux belonged. An energetic man he began to transform a medieval town in mid-18th century into the beautiful classicist city we see today, becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Under him the old town walls were torn down, avenues (here called 'cours') cut through the city, the quays were modernised and beautiful classicist buildings erected.
Young Georges Eugène, later Baron Haussmann when posted as an administrator in Bordeaux in the early 19th century was so impressed by Tourny's work, that it later inspired him for the famous 'Renovation of Paris' during the Second Empire.Written 7 February 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. She is Martha Adelaide Modeste Testas, born Al Poussi in Ethiopia. She was brought to Bordeaux at age 14 and lived to be 105 (much of that time emancipated).
It is a reminder that Bordeaux has a history in slave trade.Written 13 January 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - SoCalOregonianMurrieta, CA10,355 contributionsFountain composed of a section of hollow high fluted column on a rectangular base constructed in 1787. The base is decorated with laurel leaves and the crown represents a spurt of water. Water is discharged from four lion's heads located around the pedestal that empty into 4 basins under the lions heads. Across from the intersection of Quai des Salinieres and Rue des Faures. - BrucestewartLivingston, UK10,155 contributionsOne of many statues in Bordeaux. As with most statues sculpted from bronze it has turned green with verdigris which has formed a natural patina on the surface of the metal. The subject is 'Gloria Victis' ("glory to the vanquished") sculptured by Antonin Mercié. Many casts, with different finishes, exist. This one in Bordeaux faces Saint Andre's Cathedral. Another example of the statue is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC.Written 18 April 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
