Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- Steve_Grant1Oldham, UK1,756 contributionsThis is a must do when you are in Bordeaux. There are a lot of steps to get to the top but when you get there the views are great. There is a stopping off point just before you reach the top to get your breath back. We went at opening time when it was reasonably quiet. Booking is needed on line as there are restrictions on the numbers.Written 3 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - IloveItaly46Vero Beach, FL10 contributionsWe were looking for this church on a Saturday to see waht time their weekend Masses were. As luck would have it, we were there a few minutes after Noon and foudn that they ahad a Mass 1t 12:15PM so we were able to attend. The church is beautiful and is very understated on a side lane that may be difficult to find but it is there quite close in the Grand Theatre section, just across from the tram stop. A hidden jewel.Written 26 May 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- VadimMurmansk, Russia34,575 contributionsMaybe we were just unlucky, but we failed to get into this abbey church twice. On the first day there was a wedding, on the second day it was simply closed. Judging by the small number of interior photos on the site, many have encountered the same problem. However, even the exterior of the church deserves attention. The current church was built as part of a Benedictine abbey in the late 11th and early 12th centuries, with a Saintonge Romanesque façade. Despite the reconstruction of the famous medieval improver Paul Abadie in the 19th century, the church retained Romanesque features. The carved decor of the portal is instructive. Here is a woman bitten by a snake on the chest, as retribution for lust, and a man pulling the rope, as a symbol of the choice between good and evil. Elders with musical instruments symbolize that it is still possible to get to heaven. They write that the best thing inside the cathedral is the Dom Bedos organ of 1745, named after the creator. However, to hear it, you probably need to get married. At Sainte-Croix Cathedral…Written 9 March 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Liege-Bastogne-LiegeZurich, Switzerland455 contributionsThis eminent but hidden-away Basilica is worth finding.
That it is on a small square, with a tiny park and a local market, on a lovely but unremarkable street in a top residential part of Bordeaux adds to its attraction. It avoids the hordes of people like me who want to come and gawk.
I came by it whilst visiting Bordeaux and a friend who lives just down the street introduced me to it.
It has a rich history of a thousand years or more and the site has been a place of veneration since the 400's. It is a UNESCO heritage site as it is one of the Churches making up on e of the French branches of the Compostella de Sanitago route.
It is serene, calming, historic, venerable and peaceful.Written 14 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It is a large building which dates back to before the 12th century. It has been rebuilt a few times and it's worth visiting to admire its lovely architecture as well as the nice stained-glass windows. It is not really decorated in any elaborate manner, but if you are nearby you might as well have a look.Written 21 June 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - MalarchyMaseru, Lesotho808 contributionsL'Église Sainte-Marie de la Bastide is a late 19th century church in the La Bastide district of Bordeaux. It is a decent sized church from that area but in this city it is closer to a neighbourhood church from that era than a grand place of worship.
The church is built in a neo-Medieval style which lends it an air of history it doesn't actually possess. It is designed to evoke some of the same impression as the Gothic places of worship but it was constructed much later and that lack of authenticity feels odd.
The church is a decent size but not huge. It is in good order though and has been maintained well.
The interior is relatively restrained. The stained glass is largely just images or individuals and doesn't tell a story. There are some artworks but they are simple and unintrusive. The chapels are nice but not too exciting. The organ is quite small and its placement makes it seem unspectacular.
All in all, Sainte-Marie is a relatively plain church that has less to say than its external appearance suggests. It is quite dark inside due to its design so it doesn't quite work either as a grand building or as an inspiring community place of worship.Written 4 April 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ccoltmanmOak Forest, IL25 contributionsOff the beaten path. Next to a huge cemetery. No one was here when we visited. Ceilings and walls are all painted. Beautiful white and red marble. Worth a stop.Written 13 July 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
