What travellers are saying
- Mairwen1United Kingdom12,397 contributionsPlace de la Bourse is the popular square located on the Garonne River and facing the famous Water Mirror. It’s a magnificent square, surrounded by grand, 18th century buildings, including the Hôtel des Fermes, the Hôtel de la Bourse the central pavilion. Together they form two perfect wings that frame the square.
We were hoping to get the classic Bordeaux photo of the Place de La Bourse buildings reflected in the Water Mirror. However it was an overcast day and a steady breeze sent ripples across the surface of the water so we missed out on this. I think you need a sunny day and no wind.
There are two other points of interest at the sqaure.
i) The first is the ornate, 19th century fountain which is the centrepiece of the square. Cherubs circle the base and 3 barely-robed, bronze females stand at the top. These are the daughters of the Greek god, Zeus - Aglaé, Euphrosyne and Thalie. Each of them bestowed a special gift on mankind. Aglaé brought charm and elegance, Euphrosyne bestowed joy and happiness and Thalie brought youth and beauty.
ii) The other is the strange little figures known as mascarons. These odd faces that appear above the windows and doors of the squares buildings are characteristic symbols of the city. What’s really interesting is that they are not all the same. There are female and male characters. They have different expressions, and different hairstyles and headwear. We saw some grotesque, gargoyle-like faces and others that looked like ancient gods. There was a Turkish man wearing a large turban, and an African face (a reminder of Bordeaux’s slave trade history). Some smiled pleasantly down at you, while others were open-mouthed as if yelling. Some glared fiercely down and others looked off to the side and into the distance. Altogether, there are something like 80+ faces but if you don’t know they are there, then they are easily missed.Written 29 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It’s sort of like art gallery meets science museum meets wine information. Really enjoyed it. We had 3 hours and didn’t see everything. We learned heaps about wine and it was so interactive and fun. There were moments where it was almost overwhelming. I think if I went again I’d be a bit less completionist about finishing the exhibits as this meant I missed quite a few things. Allow quite a long time if you want to see and do everything!Written 23 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - BradHong Kong, China182,628 contributionsThis is the large reflection pool and shallow body of water situated along the Garonne River and quay just in front of Place de la Bourse. It was opened in 2006 and is considered the largest reflection pool attraction of its kind in the world.
This landmark place to visit in Bordeaux affords visitors with beautiful reflection views of Place de la Bourse which can be enjoyed day and night. It is also a spot for children to play and enjoy time playing in the shallow (2cm) pool.
We passed by a few times during our recent visit to Bordeaux. At times there were spray features occurring, at other times the pool was calm and still, offering a fairly remarkable reflection of the elegant buildings of the square in front. Quite charming and well worth making time.Written 30 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The WW2 German submarine pens are a formidable installation and a location we'd always wanted to witness. The extra bonus of an art installation is a unique juxtaposition of negative and positive outcomes for this building.
Inspiring art, music, and the expert visual presentations are simply stunning. Well done to all involved, fantastic couple of hours. HIGHLY RECOMMEND you visit this historic placement.Written 8 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - BradHong Kong, China182,628 contributionsLocated at Place Pey-Berland and known colloquially as Bordeaux Cathedral, Saint-Andrea has a history that dates back as far as the 9th-century. The cathedral you see today was constructed between the 11th-15th centuries and is Flamboyant Gothic in architecture. It has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage attraction since 1998. Opening hours are 10am to 12pm (morning) and 2pm to 7pm (evening) and entry is free.
The exterior is intricately detailed, especially the niche portal entrances. The interior features a typical narrow and tall nave with vaulted ceiling. There are fine artworks, sculptures and stained-glass windows within. Outside the cathedral you will also see the separated bell tower which dates to the 15th-century. If interested, it can be entered (€9 per adult) and climbed (233 steps) where you find terraces from which there are nice views of the city.Written 30 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Mairwen1United Kingdom12,397 contributionsThis imposing 18th century theatre is home to the Opéra National de Bordeaux.
Located in the main square, Place de la Comédie, it looks more like a classical Greek or Roman temple. 12 large Corinthian columns dominate the facade and the top of the building is crowned with 12 stone statues of ancient goddesses and muses.
We wondered what the difference between a muse and a goddess was. In ancient mythology, a muse was a source of knowledge and inspiration for the arts and sciences. Traditionally, there were 9 of them, each with their own special field which might be music or dance, astronomy or poetry. All nine are represented on top of the theatre.
We were able to visit inside. I can see that other reviewers below have commented that the Theatre is not open for tours. However we were lucky because we were here during the EU Heritage Open Day weekend when many historic buildings are open to the public for free.
The interior is very grand, with a central curving staircase leading to a large and lavishly decorated auditorium. The high ceilings are covered with frescos and chandeliers. It's all very impressive and worth a visit if you get the chance.Written 28 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Several fishmongers and butchers, as well as vegetable stalls.

Opening hours are 7am to 8pm daily. The park is located along Cr de Verdun and quite accessible from most parts of the city centre in Bordeaux.
Today you will find a lovely park with pond, paved walkways through grounds with mature trees, flowerbeds and vegetation growth near the watersheds, which are made of use by numerous birds. There 18th-century buildings and terraces within, quite a few monuments to important historic figures born in Bordeaux, a atmospheric creperie and plenty of grounds for those seeking rural and green space during visits to the city.
We spent around 90 minutes wandering the gardens and enjoying a glass of wine at L'Orangerie. Quite enjoyed our time here and would gladly return during future trips to Bordeaux.Written 11 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
