What travellers are saying
- Malibu_JennyReading, UK483 contributionsI’m a big fan of this museum! It provided some great entertainment when my children were small and I was delighted to return on a more grown up trip and really take my time looking round it. There’s plenty for all ages here and it’s engaging and brilliantly displayed.
Swindon is at the centre of the Great Western Railway - Paddington to Penzance - and the vast Steam Works where the locomotives were built was still in use until 1986.
There’s a great deal to explore in this area, including the neatly laid out Railway Village where the workers were housed, the GWR park, the GWR swimming baths (that were heated by the steam works) and the vast brick workshops that now hold the outlet village. Unsurprisingly, all of this is a very short walk from the Railway Station.
Inside the museum, you can get an understanding of how it everything operated, the scale of the Works and the lives of the people who worked here. You can work a signal box, drive a Steam Train simulator, climb aboard the Caerphilly Castle locomotive or use the inspection pits to see the underneath of the train. I love the convincing mock ups of the railway offices and stores, the dummies dressed as navvies and clerks. Queen Victoria’s royal carriage stands at a station platform with a full scale ticket office and waiting room. Maps, posters, first aid kits. Bring a few 20p pieces to enjoy the vintage arcade.
Every bit of the museum has hands on opportunities and the collection of Railway Memorabilia is - in my opinion - far more extensive, interesting and cleverly displayed than the offering from the London Transport Museum. You feel like the items are still in use and being enjoyed. This is a safe bet for a railway lover and it’s all indoors and fairly accessible. It’s bigger than you think and you probably want around three hours to visit.
Steam has an impressive entrance, clean modern toilets and a very small cafe. (The maze of restaurants in the adjoining outlet village gives you plenty of other food options). The gift shop is a little bland and needs more railway gift options, but it’s not bad. Staff are friendly and exceptionally knowledgeable.

WiFi dropped when entering a store, however the lovely ladies in Dune helped a lot and honoured the discount. All staff we encountered were very pleasant and helpful, special mention to Stekchers Nike and M n S. nice big car park. Didn’t have time to visit the food court.Written 26 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Tharindu KKandy, Sri Lanka243 contributionsWe went there with family and friends and thoroughly enjoyed the visit! Our kids enjoyed the open fields and the beautiful lake! We didn't go exploring much as it was cloudy but we had the most unforgettable picnic there! Highly recommend the place.Written 13 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Michelle54321Barwell, UK46 contributionsAs I was taking 4 elderly people with various disabilities, after some difficulty in obtaining a phone number that would be answered, I spoke to a very helpful lady who explained to me where to park and assured me she would help with access on the night. As arranged, I called her from the car park and she escorted us in through a back entrance and up in a lift. She arranged access to the disabled toilet on the same floor. We sat and had a drink in the lovely cafe area and then moved to our seats. The visibility was great because the chairs are offset. During the interval, another staff member showed some ladies to some additional toilets, when the queue became quite long. The show was great and the brilliant staff helped us to leave in the same way we had entered. It is rare today to experience such consistently excellent customer service. I was extremely impressed.Written 3 December 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- Katie B7 contributionsWe love Roves and have signed up for membership at the farm because we visit so often. We've been many times now and our daughter LOVES how interactive the farm is. We always try to go early to avoid the rush and this morning we almost had the whole farm to ourselves! The farm is great value for money with multiple activities and soft play included with the entry fee. The tractor ride is well worth the extra couple of pounds and the driver's commentary is always a giggle for the grown ups especially!
I've seen lots of reviews recently saying that it's run down, but I think the reality is that it's a small working family farm. It might not be as glamorous as other similar attractions but it's clean, looked after and clearly loved by a great team of people and we love visiting. Keira in particular stood out today, engaging with my daughter and chatting with me whilst we petted the rabbits and fed the goats. You really can't go wrong at Roves Farm.Written 6 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. They had an array of computers, well displayed and information given. There's even the opportunity to play some retro games. BF found the model of his first computer - Sinclair 128K 2+ and played Dizzy! #Nostalgia.
So interesting to see how the world of computers started and changed. Worth a visit, especially for younger gen to see what computers and gaming was like.
Shout out to the team too who were friendly and knowledgeable. Only name I got was Chris.Written 29 June 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We didn’t know about Jungle Parc but as soon as we did all 3 children wanted a go so we booked on for after lunch. We are so pleased we did. It is great value for money. The low ropes course build in difficulty and all 3 children loved every minute. I was really impressed with all of the staff but especially Dan who did the safety instruction and practice course. It was pitched perfectly for the age range but also for my son who struggles to process information. We will definitely be returning.Written 22 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Ian JPlymouth, UK287 contributionsLovely little Hillfort, but hard work to get to...
There is a permissive path signposted from the Ridgeway, but no way of actually getting to the site through the barbed wire fence surrounding it (unless you don't mind climbing through a hole that someone has cut just by the gate to the Hillfort.
The ramparts are impressive, although the ditch was filled with nettles - it's not being treated sympathetically.Written 20 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. A+ for adding a splash of color to the usual otherwise mundane vertical adventures, definitely the best stair case in Swindon!Written 25 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
