Jarlshof Prehistoric and Norse Settlement Sumburgh
#1 of 19 Sights & Landmarks in Mainland
Wonderful audio guide as signage make this sensitively excavated site a gem of wondrous history evoking architecture and social history going back millenia.
There is a feeling of profound memories that surrounds this remarkable Bronze Age archaeological site that continues remains dating from 2500BC up to the 17th century AD.

Scalloway Castle Scalloway
#3 of 19 Sights & Landmarks in Mainland
The bus ride in itself was delightful viewing the countryside and beautiful views of the ocean from raised elevations.
Great views from the first floor if you can stomach the steep spiral staircase!
Town Hall Lerwick

If you love architecture this is a great site to visit.
Nice walk up, stonework on way, view the clock, stained glass.

Mareel Lerwick
#5 of 19 Sights & Landmarks in Mainland
I am a frequent visitor to Mareel there is a great choice of pictures to view the latest we went to see was Star Wards and Snoopy and Charlie Brown with our Grand daughter which were both great.
You get a good view of the changing weather outside while feeling cosy in the huge settees.
Mousa Lerwick
#6 of 19 Sights & Landmarks in Mainland
Apart from that the island has an RSPB site with many interesting inhabitants and if you're lucky on the boat trip across to the island you might see a whale.
The Mousa Broch is probably the world's best preserved broch, an iron age tower in which you can still climb the original steps to experience the wonderful views.
Eshaness Cliffs West Heogaland
#7 of 19 Sights & Landmarks in Mainland
Blessed with a warm sunny day and spectacular walk along the cliff top with great views.
You can walk as far or as close as you wish, but maybe take a picture of the info board so you know what sites you're looking at.
Fort Charlotte Lerwick

views to die for, and a lovely tour, the view is straight over the harbour and very knowledgeable.
This area is well worth the visit from the point of view it gives a great view of Lerwick, the Harbour and over to the Island of Bressay.

Bonhoga Gallery Weisdale
#9 of 19 Sights & Landmarks in Mainland
The building itself is in a good location, with most of Shetland’s tree collection to the north and superb views over Weisdale Voe if you head south then west towards Bixter.
We loved the art display and had tea and cake outside with a wonderful view.

Old Scatness Sumburgh
#11 of 19 Sights & Landmarks in Mainland
This is a site excavated by students from Bradford, with a broch, a smithy, wheelhouses, roundhouses, a real Iron Age feast.
The Neolithic site is challenging to date but based on other sites in the area it is probably some 5000 years old.
Eshaness Hoswick
#12 of 19 Sights & Landmarks in Mainland
That view of the Great Atlantic Ocean; of the roaring waves against the ancient cliffs of Eshasness; of the vast expanse; where the sea meets the sky.
The Braewick Cafe is only 3 miles from Eshaness, serves good coffee, has superb views of the Hillswick coastline and is a good place for a short break en route.

Stanydale Temple Bixter
#15 of 19 Sights & Landmarks in Mainland
Stanydale Temple is a Neolithic site on Mainland, Shetland.
Shetland is very poor at making much noise about its historic sites, Jarlshof aside.
St Magnus Church Lerwick
#16 of 19 Sights & Landmarks in Mainland
We love visiting cathedrals and old churches...but even more, seeing a church that is still living and not turned into just a museum or site for other activities.
