Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- Lisa Z1 contributionFriendly staff, organised and lots of fun.
Their surfboards and wetsuits are excellent quality, clean and in great condition.
The owners are local with lots of knowledge.
Great beach but bring sandals as the black sand gets hot!Written 18 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Our instructor Maddie was great and one could tell that she is passionate about surfing. Her safety and technique instructions were highly-competent with a focus on getting us into the water.
There, she encouraged us with a constant focus on technique improvement. The experience was so great thar I spontanously tented a board from them and continued until the end of the incoming tide. Never learned so much in such a short time. Thanks Maddie and thanks Piha Surf Academy - ChrisWritten 22 March 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Their safaris look amazing so I was thrilled when this one came up at Lake Clearwater, with advice that it would be suitable for beginners (being able to sail/taxi upwind a pre-requisite however as the walk of shame is from way down the other end of the lake!). I have learned so much on this trip with the benefit of consistent wind and warm and 'flat' water. The tips and bits of advice from Heidi and Bevan along the way have contributed immensely to my learning journey. I left feeling inspired and longing for more. I will definitely be back next year and highly recommend. Oh and lest not forget the scenery and tranquility of the high country. Something for everyone.Written 8 March 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Tanya C7 contributionsI took my 11 year old son to Omaha for a Wakeboard lesson with Tony.
He was an exceptional, patient and knowledgeable instructor. Took great time to make sure that everyone understood and encouraged all to achieve great things!

By the end of the lesson all of us had managed to standup on the board, if not for very long. The equipment was great and well looked after. A great group activity or for anyone really.Written 13 March 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Dan Prior1 contributionI emailed Elements surf and set up a 5 day surf camp which was so cool I extended it by another 3. Coming directly from the UK I was quite clueless but Chelsea really helped by organising basically everything for me making it really easy and worthwhile. Alex was a great tour guide and occasional surf instructor and finally, Julles was just the best, took me from a total surfing beginner to sitting out the back trying to catch the green waves with everyone else. The accommodation is really beautiful and the vegetarian catering from Brett was delicious!
I surfed before with some surfschools and i had an injury, but i feelt every minute really confident and save.
I never learned soooooo mutch about the surf, the techniques, the ocean, the terms and also a bit about myself!
Brett explained everything so clear and helpful! I was asking a lot of things and i got every time a really good and sometimes funny answers! :)
The week helped me a lot to improve my surf skills!
A big hug and a really big thank you Brett for teaching me all the stuff!

- AcinetoAuckland Central, New Zealand24,339 contributionsWent with a friend to try out windsurfing. It costs $55 per lesson and I was able to get a special where you get 6 lessons for the price of 5. The cost includes all the gears including the wetsuit as well as a personal instructor. The staff and Alan are friendly which made it easy to learn and enjoy. They also do wing surfing as well as foiling.
I usually just book the next session the day after my lesson. I haven't book just gear yet though but they do that too.
They are located in Sylvan Park in Milford, just head to the lake and you should be able to see the van. It was a really nice intro to windsurfing.Written 24 December 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - The pole dancer1 contributionI booked a set of 3 group lessons at 11am for 3 days in a row. They emailed at 9pm the day before to tell me it would be changed into 2 private lessons. I was travelling alone so was hoping to meet others in the group lesson so private lessons wasn’t my preference but I accepted as I had no other option. They were very vague about why the lessons were becoming private but it turned out to be because they didn’t have anyone else booked onto the group lessons. I did 30 mins of the lesson in really rough conditions before we called it a day due to the bad weather and I was offered a refund. They never gave me the refund and stopped replying to my emails.
The whole thing seemed unprofessional and disorganised. Would not recommend paying money to these people in advance although I’m sure they would be fine at teaching.Written 4 March 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We had so much fun that my husband went and bought a board that evening! So for us this is the beginning of a beautiful hobby, thanks so much guys.Written 17 February 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
