Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I rode this on a dr650 in late december 2022 when the weather was unsettled but not raining. The steep climb up to Duffers saddle had me up in the clouds but for the rest of the time it was just a bit chilly.
I'm not a great dirt rider and found the creek crossings a bit challenging. Originally the plan was for my partner to ride also but covid mucked that plan up. In hindsight I think that it might have been just too difficult for a relatively new rider and was glad I did it alone.
One of those trips you are glad you chose to do.

A fabulous shop filled with hand made and locally sourced crafts, arts and jewellery. Great place to stop, grab a drink from Coffee Bomb and visit

We stopped at the hunnyshop when we returned from Milford Sound. It was a super rainy day and driving was exhausting, so I decided to make a short break without any expectation 🤷🏻‍♂️ We ended up tasting the different kinds of honey and spent a hell of money for super delicious honey 🤣. Can really recommend this shop! Super friendly, super qualified and super delicious honey! My favorite honey is the „Wild Forest“, you definitely have to try this one - for me it’s the best honey in the world! I will definitely keep purchasing it from Germany once my 2 glasses are empty.
We as well found a good Manuka honey, but I found out for myself the special taste of Manuka honey is not mine.
Long story short… this shop is definitely worth a stop and I can highly recommend it 👍🏻

This shop is a rare find: many different local honeys as well an education in Manuka honey grades with free tastings. Tony Sparks guided us through the tastings and also knew the ins and outs of how to clear US customs with honey, offering to ship it to avoid any hassle or confiscation. I liked the taste of their rosemary honey as well as their standard grade Manuka that, to me, had hints of molasses. My daughter bought it since she lives in NZ while I got a business card so that I can order online from them. Attached to the honey store is the home decor store The Stables. Again, a rare find: they carried beautiful tooled leather bound journals, intricate pins made of bright beads and felted wool, sheep skins, and lovely decorative containers. My daughter bought 2 journals, one for herself and one as a gift for her husband. Well worth a leisurely stop for local goods.

There is no category for a multi-generational family under “type of visit,” only for young children or teens. My husband and I visited this shop with our 26 year old twin daughters, one of whom now lives in NZ, while on a vacation exploring the country together.

We were lucky enough to ride and stay at Slate Hutt. The track is great from a riding and historic perspective. It felt like genuine wilderness riding. The weather was brilliant and made the weekend even better. The views and sunset from Salet Hutt were awesome.

The Historic KINGSTON FLYER STEAM TRAIN still uses Fairlight Station as its turning point.
It is 14 kms from Kingston & the train was restored & undertook a couple of runs but the COVID climate no doubt has ended its operation for the time being & it sits mothballed in its Kingston yard.
This is a major attraction for the area - well KIngston at least - & with little on offer between Queenstown & Te Anau, the train needs to light up & begin again.
There is absolutely nothing at Fairlight but I noticed from my original visit back in 2018, that the station has now been enlarged out the back with a café it seems.
Its attraction is its isolated position sitting under the Garvie Mountains offering a spectacular backdrop.
Photographers please note its unique position.
