Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

- Gavin RHalf Moon Bay, New Zealand24 contributionsHike up the Dukes Nose. Great hike. Either from a boat or the road end.
It is a steep short track from the DOC hut. You have a steep section just before the top clambering up a rock wall with the metal ladder bar shown.Written 5 March 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The blue water, the bays, the village were all so postcard perfect. The trail was easy to find and follow. Definitely do this walk.Written 6 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- 746sheryl5 contributionsMy husband is 71 and I am 68, we walked in from Totara North, we found the track quite challenging, as we're only moderately fit, but determined to give it a go.
The track had some quite steep inclines and descents with a lot of tree roots and small boulders. You had to watch your footing, there were muddy patches where you had to boulder hop. The two stream crossings were fine but a little hard on bare feet if you removed your boots. We took 2 hours from the start of the track to reach Lane Cove, where we had our lunch then set out for the Dukes Nose. It was very steep and we stopped quite often for a breather but got there in about 40 minutes. We found the climb up the rocks no problem at all, coming down was fine as well, you just had to be careful to get a good foot hold and hang on tight. The views from the top were amazing, it was well worth the effort of getting there.
We returned via the track as well, we stopped at the stream crossings and had a swim in the waterhole, it was pretty cold but so refreshing. Another reviewer had recommended doing this, so we took our togs. We were pretty tired by the time we got back to Totara North, but if we had taken the water taxi it would have been a long walk back from the wharf to collect our vehicle. We were very pleased with what we had accomplished, the weather had been fine and dry for the previous week, would have been more challenging in wet conditions.Written 4 March 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Highly recommend for people visiting the area from near, far & wide. Also an awesome way to finish a morning of hiking the Wairakau stream track/dukes nose!Written 27 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - tracyNewcastle, Australia10 contributionsMy friends and I had an absolutely amazing kayaking trip with Justin. A most memorable time for us all.
We’d highly recommend doing the three day overnight tour for anyone with limited to experienced kayaking abilities. Justin took great care to ensure our safety and we all felt completely comfortable and secure while having so much fun.
Highlights of this three day trip include: paddling through pristine waters to sea caves, an island shore break; and exploring sea tunnels. Such thrills!
We collected cockles which Justin cooked for us, and also fresh oysters.
A couple of hikes were also enjoyed. One to the Dukes Nose that provided spectacular views, and an evening of discovering glow worms in a nearby creek.
A few swims and great meals topped off a very enjoyable holiday.Written 25 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
