Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We called in here on our way down the West Coast on a recent three week road trip, to try our hand at becoming millionaires.

The lady in the shop was very friendly. We were the only ones there, and she was very good at explaining what to do. You go out the back and you get a pan of stones and sand, and they show you how to swirl the water around to slowly get rid of the rocks, stones and sand, leaving you (hopefully!!) with a little bit of gold.

Hubby got a bit more gold than me, but we both got some flakes of gold which stood out against the black pans. I also got a couple of little bits of greenstone.

They put the gold flakes and greenstone into a little glass vial for you, so that you can take them home.

It is a great way to spend an hour or two. We didn’t actually go through the museum but it looked very interesting – there’s a huge amount of history in this area. There’s also a shop at the front. I bought a couple of trinkets from there.

If you want to try your hand, please check the website as they are currently not open seven days.

There are very clean toilets alongside the gold panning area. And it doesn’t matter if it’s raining, out the back where you do the mining is under cover.

As an aside, I’d like to say how difficult the Covid lockdown years must have been for places like Ross, where the whole place relies so heavily on tourist dollars. If my few $$ can help the area recover I’ll be very happy.

Well maintained track with lovely insights into yesteryear. This is a must do. Tried panning in the river but no luck. Was also surprised that the area was sandfly free.

In the proud tradition of NZ having unusual walls, we found this tea pot wall. Beautifully maintained unusual teapots. Owner smiled and waved. A nice spot.

We were a group of 14 Cantabrians looking for some adventure on the Coast - and we found it with our day of rafting on the Whataroa river. Awesome experience with well-qualified, safety-conscious guides who were so relaxed and also reassuring to those who hadn't rafted before. The rafting was mixed in with some waterfall jumping, and and some abseiling, and a delicious lunch - were we just hungry or was that the best outdoor lunch ever? Barney has great cabbage-chopping skills! We had two safety kayakers which was very reassuring. All the boat guides were very experienced and great to spend the day with. Thanks Weka, Percy, Kennet, Gareth and Barney for a great day out!
