Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Mal was friendly, really knew his stuff and took us up the river where we spotted 6 crocs, egrets, jabiru, azure kingfisher, striated heron and terns. Well worth $50.

Weipa can be extraordinarily windy at sea and so a face mask is a sensible investment.Tackle World is the place to go.They also stock a great range of lures.Don't miss it.

This was an incredible fishing trip! We caught heaps of fish every day. The guides are very knowledgeable putting us right onto the fish. Kurt, Jamie and the team couldn't have been more helpful. Thanks you very much. We will be coming back again.
All you need to bring is a long sleeve shirt, a big hat and sunscreen.

Weipa has been on my “bucket list’ for many years as a destination to visit and spend some time salt-water fly fishing and everyone (everyone!) I spoke with told me these were the guys to go with.

The name “Fish” on the company name relates to the original owner (Alan “Fish” Philliskirk) who was a pioneer of the fishing guide business in Cape York – along with a couple of others (including well known writer, angler and film maker Peter Morse) – and is one of the reasons why Weipa is now one of the most desirable fishing destinations in Australia, if not the world (check out Google and Podcast searches for more info)

Late last year, after more than 2 decades in the business, Fish sold the business to his guide and friend Mark Bargenquast (AKA Bargy) who, having worked with Fish for around 10 years, is more than capable to take the reigns and continue to offer some of the best salt water fly and lure fishing in the world.

COVID had thwarted several of my planned trips to the area but, eventually, a window of time worked and I was booked even though I was travelling solo.

Bargy was great at helping me plan the trip with not only gear and tackle advice but they are such a slick operation that as well as booking the boat and guide the package also included accommodation at the “Lodge” located on the Weipa Camp site, a very reasonable food package with an in-house chef to cook breakfast and evening meals and also airport transfers (the shuttle bus driver Ma (who was lovely) even stopped off at the bottle shop on the way to the Lodge so we could stock up on cold drinks for the week!)

I booked my flights (Sydney - Cairns - Weipa - Cairns - Sydney) and I was all set to go.

From there things ran like clockwork… The guides turned up at 7am with the boats on trailers, and then, after a planning session with our guide they took us the short drive to the boat ramp and an easy hop on to the well-equipped boat, undertook the mandatory safety briefing and then off we’d go to spend the day chasing a variety of species.

We had plenty of time on the water as most days we weren’t back at the ramp until around 4pm in time for cool drinks on the balcony back at the lodge with nibbles provided by Sean the chef and then a nice refreshing shower and relax before Sean would serve us a delicious 3 course meal.

The Lodge had other guests staying so breakfast and dinner were a communal event in a large shared area and everyone got on great and it was good to meet new people and share stories, fishing (and life) advice (! :)) and the odd drink or two at the end of a fantastic day (For me this was a great part of the trip as we all got on so well)

The weather gods though weren’t too kind as there had been big swells prior to our arrival which made several preferred local fishing grounds unsuitable for fishing so we weren’t able to get out of heads in the early part of the week so plan B was to spend the day chasing (and catching on fly) barra, queenfish, trout, bream, barracuda and all manner of other species in and around a variety of tidal rivers and estuaries mainly fishing structure and drains which, in some cases proved challenging but, overall very productive – my kind of fishing and not too bad for a plan B !!!!

These guys know their stuff and they really want you to get the best from the trip and to get you on to great fishing – even maybe the fish of a lifetime!

We (there were 4 boats out most days) did get out on the Friday (the last day of fishing) which was fantastic.

Sight fishing and catching large tuna on a 10# outfit was a first for me.. the feeling of seeing a school of large tuna racing towards you at a rapid rate of knots, casting to them and watching them gulping down the fly almost at your feet and then….Hang On!!!

    Simply amazing….

Sight fishing to a variety of fish on the flats from the bow of the boat was also on the menu and great sport and then even fishing the FADS for queenies on the way home all made for a great day.

There are so many options and so much water there that it is a very special place for beginners or experienced people alike.

At the lodge we had a gent from NZ with his 14 year old grandson who was fishing for the first time and caught some amazing fish (including a queenie that was metre long - not bad for a first trip young man!) we had a family group of grandfather, father and son who had been previously and have booked for next year already and then, 3 other parties of “experienced anglers” who were also able to get on to some great fish and take some great pics for the folks back home!

I can thoroughly recommend Bargy and his operation to anyone considering fishing fly or lure in the area.

He guides personally as does his son Jacko and long-time mates Kurt and Drew so there is a strong camaraderie amongst the crew and each runs a safe, stable boat, well suited to the conditions and their knowledge of the local area and prime locations and their friendly and professional manner makes for a great day out on the water.

The fishing side is great, the accommodation was very good - clean, cool and well furnished - my room had everything I needed (fridge & TV in the room with an ensuite plus tea/coffee making facility) and the beds were comfy (and even made for us every day when we were out fishing!) and the food from Sean the chef was simply top notch each morning and evening (the guides made food for us on the water when we were out)

All in all, a great trip and I’m planning to return next year I hope and will certainly join the ranks of the many people recommending these guys to book with.
