It was afternoon in August and the temperature was perfect and the reflections on the lake were gorgeous. I definitely recommend this hike for the whole family. - Richard NStroud, UK467 contributionsThe trail from Bear Lake does go up hill from the off but it's never over taxing in its steepness. We went in late June and there was plenty of snow around particularly above Dream Lake and that was the toughest bit.
There were a few people about who seemed to be getting agitated about how far it was. The walk took over an hour in total but boy, it's worth it. Nice views at the top, but if you're looking for waterfalls or something you would have to go elsewhere.Definitely takes adjustment to the altitude, however the scenic ride up and down is nice (can even come across a lot of varied wildlife). The parking lot was very crowded, as was the line to the bathrooms, but that's to be expected overall. This is a nice stop along the ride to the Peak to Peak scenic highway and is well worth the visit. The lake is so serene and will just captivate you in. However, there were a few individuals like us who walked the road. It was an enjoyable experience. We had gear so when the road ran into snow higher up, we were still able to keep going. We found no parking available at Glacier Gorge Junction, so we decided to drive on up to the Bear Lake parking lot where we lucked into a parking space that had just been vacated. (Otherwise, we would have backtracked to the overflow parking lot and taken the shuttle.) Visiting this area certainly requires planning and patience.
Planning and patience paid off with a very enjoyable trail to a beautiful waterfall. I made the scramble up the waterfall with a 2 year old in my hiking backpack. It wasn't exactly easy, but absolutely doable. Sky Pond was just like a dream. At one point, my son and I were the only ones there (my wife waited at the waterfall). The whole hike is pretty, and you pass some great lakes where you can stop to take in the views or have a snack but Sky Pond is the real treasure and I highly recommend keeping on until you make it there! The beautiful, boulder filled lake at the end was a great reward and it was less crowded than the lower lakes. Parking can be difficult although the lot is a good size.
