Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- armani123sgSingapore, Singapore322 contributionsQuite a big market but there were many stalls that had games and the food as well kind of repeated through many stalls. Overall, it was a nice experience.Written 27 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- jronkowskiChicago, IL203 contributionsThis is a fantastic little museum of carved stones/rocks. It’s not for everyone but if you’re into rocks , stones or art this might be for you . It was free for me because I am 77. But otherwise about $1 entry fee. My phones battery died or I would have taken lots of photos. Most of the stones are on a wooden pedestal of some sort, the artist found the beauty of the stone and covered it with wax or shellac . Some of the stones are carved into figures like an insect for example. There are some stones in the shape of a lady’s pocketbook and the artist attached a leather handle and closure. There was a huge table of stoned made to look like food . The meat is fantastic. A lot of the stone is from the local area . I have never seen a museum like thisWritten 14 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Kimitaka STaichung, Taiwan15,193 contributionsIt is a local shopping street, which is especially popular for young people. Because motor vehicles are banned from entering, you can enjoy tranquilly shopping. The ambiance is quite different during the day and at night. I recommend you to go at night.Written 27 June 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Patrick BMaastricht, The Netherlands714 contributionsWe hired bikes for our 3-day east coast ride here. Well-serviced bikes come with pumps, bottle holder and bags, but you will need to buy a (cheap) repair kit. Overall we were very happy with the bikes, though the saddle on mine was very unforgiving (and I ride a race bike at home). This shop is much better than the one in Taitun. Staff in Hualien are friendly and competent, whereas in Taitun they didn’t really do anything when we arrived - not even asking whether we had a nice time... Two top tips for those who want to do the trip:
1) Ride as much as you can on the Route 193. Quit road, nice scenery. We heard that the main roads are busy - though less climbing, but we are experienced cyclist - and less pretty. The last day will be on a main road as there are no other options.
2) You can have your luggage send to Taitun at the train station, so you can only pack the essentials for the bike ride. Very reliable and cheap.Written 25 December 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The street is lined with stalls of independent merchants selling all kinds of stones from Taiwan and other countries (jade, rhodonite or "rose stone," to name a few), either in their raw form or fashioned into jewelry and other artwork. With some patience, you can find lovely souvenirs unique to Hualien; the vendors are mostly very friendly and eager to chat with you about their wares. Shiyi is right next to the large night market, so you can easily visit both in one evening!Written 21 January 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jarko2015Amsterdam, The Netherlands1,731 contributionsA more traditional market, in a paved area of the city quite close to the Tungtamen food market, the stalls and shops here are considerably more upscale than you'd normally find in an Asian market. It's clearly where the young and well off locals come to hang out and shop. Well designed and laid out, there's a great atmosphere but none of the chaos or shabbiness most Asian markets offer.Written 20 September 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
