Daniel went into so much detail (in an engaging and entertaining way) and really got us to properly critique the wine. It was a very different tour to the ones in Europe. The lunch was lovely and the wines here are great too. The owner personally greets all the guests so it has a real family touch. Can’t recommend this enough! It was my favourite tour in Uruguay.
A heads up though, as with every tour in Uruguay they tend to run over, so for planning purposes the tour finishes at 4. Veronica went above and beyond to help us when our flight was cancelled, causing us to arrive two days late. She helped us get everything sorted and rescheduled. The wine tours she arranged made for a fantastic day capped off by a great dinner at a local restaurant (La Otra) that she recommended and booked for us. - Kim GToronto, Canada1,909 contributionsWe had a a last minute change with our ship itinerary which had us miss the port of Punta del Este and arrive early into Montevideo. We had a city tour booked in Punta del Este but felt the transport time plus touring would be too long given our late arrival into the port. So we made a last minute change to this tour.
I must say that I appreciated the flexibility of the tour company to make a last minute change. However we thought that we would be having a guided "wine tour" meaning to a few different wineries. This was not the case.
We were met at the pier by a lady who spoke English and directed us a van with a driver. She quickly showed us on a map the region we would be visiting. Then said goodbye. We had no idea what was happening and next we knew we were driving off with a man who spoke no English. We had no idea where we were going and the driver could not communicate at all.
After a 45 minute drive away from the city we were dropped off at a winery (Pizzorno) where the folks seemed surprised to see us. We were led to a private room and told we would now receive lunch. The people serving us were very nice and the food was terrific but with little understanding of what to expect we were a little unsettled. Turns out that since we had arrived so late they decided to give us lunch first rather than the tour that would normally be conducted beforehand. We had a brief walk through their vineyard and production area. Again all the staff were very nice and the wine was excellent.
We purchased some wine, the driver came to pick us up and drove us back to the port. That was it. While the time spent at the winery was nice we really didn't feel that for the very quite high price that the value was there. We have participated in wine tours in many different countries and have never paid this much to visit only one winery. The staff is clearly passionate about their craft, evident in their knowledge and flair in guiding us through tasting the types of wines offered.
The second half of the tour was a larger winery which was also family-owned, with a great lunch and selection of wines. I was very lucky to have beautiful sunny weather, but also got unlucky with the amount of other unrelated groups that arrived, which made things a little busier than expected.

We were a group of ten on a cruise circumnavigating South America and chose this half day experience through Top Private Tours. We actually booked three different tours through them and all of them were great. Fernando, the owner, was very responsive, organized and helpful. Our wonderful guide, Elina, was a treasure. She was very knowledgeable, spoke good English, and clearly loves her beautiful city. She answered all our questions and showed us so many great sites in our short time frame. We saw all the sites promised in the tour description plus went to a local market that was very interesting. By the time we were dropped off at the port we all remarked how lucky we were to have chosen this company. I highly recommend taking this tour. Thanks again Elina and Fernando.
