First-rate Botanical gardens, quiet environment, and a café with anything you want. Spend the day roaming many winding paths through mature forests and ponds and streams. One of many things in New Plymouth that make it stand out as a place to visit. Our visit was not the optimum flowering period but we had not thought that was a negative as the park entices you to meander along well made paths. There is an amphitheatre which I’m sure has some very nice concerts at times, too.

A special place whenever we visit New Plymouth. Easily accessed from the city where we were staying, a nice wide flat path and easy walking. Very nice views up and down the coast and out to sea.
It's great to see it being so well used and I think a real asset to the community.

It was a cloudy day, but it was also our only day in the area, so we still decided to do the walk up to the Pouakai Tarn. The walk itself is beautiful, even on a cloudy day. You start off in a ferny rainforest on the Mangorei Track, with a well constructed path made up of lots of steps- see pics.

We finished up in the alpine areas in the clouds, where it was a lot cooler, and a totally different feel.

It took about 2.5 hours at a decent speed to get up to the tarn, and an hour and a half to come back down, with plenty of picture stops.

I can't show any pics with a view, as there was no view, but it was still a good experience.

After a pleasant drive through rainforest at the foot of Taranaki Maunga (mountain), you arrive at Pukeiti Gardens. What a beautiful spot to spend a couple of hours taking gentle walks around the rhododendrons (just the start of the season so not in full bloom yet). Worth a visit. The food at the cafe was a bit meh!

A really interesting museum that is free to enter. We spent about 1.5 hours enthralled in the exhibitions and written descriptions. Especially enjoyed the Māori treasures and reclaimed carvings.

For the price (FREE!) you really can't beat it. Fun playground and some cute animals. Only one Capybara was there, but there were a couple of tortoises, monkeys and otters. The bird cage where you can walk through had some very colourful birds. Recommend if you're in town with kids.

I had been told this museum was worth seeing and how right they were. The exhibits are jaw-droppingly good. So much attention to detail and historical information about the area. You could easily spend a couple of hours here. Highly recommend. Food at the cafe looked pretty good too.

Captivating walk thru of an exceptionally preserved Arts and Crafts home and garden. It’s Beatrix Potter-ville and utterly adorable. The tour by Cliff the guide was informational and clearly he is fond of the Russells and what they achieved. Not just with Tūpare, but also Pukeiti gardens at the foot of Taranaki Maunga. Perfect to-do on a rainy day, even better in the sun.

Rated as very good as it has potential to be a nice trip (currently some road works, re-sealing and very narrow in parts), so currently more like 'average'.
4 saddles to cross all with different views and the Whangamomona village was a nice break in the trip and the hotel seems popular.
Definitely the long way around heading to New Plymouth from Auckland (probably adds 2hrs +), but is now a trip ticked off the list

We cycled over this on the coastal walkway. It's quite something, views through it to the snow capped mountains and the sea on the other side. It feels / looks like you're passing through a whale skeleton. Most impressive

Totally recommend running down the sand dune to the beach. It is quite steep and the sand was hot so don't stop.

Beautiful beach for a stroll. It is a short walk out along the river to the beach sand. We went after rainy days and it was pretty muddy on the walk over. Still doable. Good to note -where shoes you don’t mind getting dirty or bring something to clean your feet after. Once out to the ocean, wow. Stunning views all around. We arrived within an hour of low tide. It was fun to adventure through some of the caves and passageways in the coastal bluffs. The reflections into the wet sand were incredible. Even on a day with a bit of rainy mist. Great for a couple hours -several if it’s a nice day. Do check the tides, the rocks and further parts of the beach would not be accessible at higher tides. We went a little further than the broken Elephant rock and still at near low had to go through one of the cave tunnels to get to the further section of beach.
