This is the battlefield where Ieyasu Tokugawa’s armies defeated those of Ishida Mitsunari in October 1600 that led to the creation of the Tokugawa Shogunate that ruled for 260 years. We visited the site on a short stopover from Kyoto to Takayama. The area includes a folklore museum, a number of base camps, a grave site, and some memorials. The Mt Sasao/Ishida Mitsunari base camp provides a nice view of the whole battlefield area, and it has an overview map of the battlefield area where all the armies were initially stationed along with an English version of the battle description. There was sufficient signage in English to make the visit worthwhile. We toured on very nice bikes you can rent at the visitors center.

Well worth visiting for the explanatory video of the historical events. I felt like I was literally part of the battle as a samouraï. Unfortunately most of the flyers are in Japanese but still an interesting visit for whoever wants to know about medieval Japanese history

This was a tiny museum but there was a good description of the battle of Sekigahara available in English. Minimal English signage elsewhere.
But it was good to look at if you like history as there was a comparison of other important wars.

The town itself surrounding the museum was really sweet and off the main tourist track. You get a guide map so you could walk/drive around the town to all the important sites from the war.

Overall we enjoyed our visit and would recommend it to anyone who likes history.

The gift shop across from the train station had some great souvenirs and some snacks.
We didn't find any proper eateries so bringing lunch would be advisable

As we looked a little lost at first, people came to us to help us out in english/japanese. As they discovered we came from Belgium, we had a elaborate and interesting conversation comparing japanese history with european and belgian history.
