This is a scenic destination and very popular with tourists to Crete. It’s one of the “must see” Crete destinations however it’s not for the faint hearted, particularly those who drive to the destination and need to negotiate the stairs to the beach.
We got some very good advice from the locals to get there early and leave by lunch time which is when the large passenger ferries drop off hundreds of people onto the beach. We viewed the ferries coming in first hand from a high vantage point and it looked like ants swarming the beach.
My advice is to get there early, around 9am if you’re driving. There’s a very long, bumpy, dirt road which you need to negotiate on the way in. Getting there early assures you won’t be pushed wide onto the edge of the goat track like road at times to allow oncoming vehicles through. It also ensures you will get a park in the car park closest to the stairs.
BEWARE, the stairs are difficult to descend and ascend. We are relatively fit and in our late 40’s and we found it a very solid workout to get down and particularly to get up again.
The beach itself is beautiful and worth the effort however I strongly recommend you fork out for a chair and umbrella because it gets hot.
There is a canteen which sells snacks and cold drinks at a reasonable price considering it’s location.

We drove two hours from the Chania area to the secluded beach, on the beach we discovered spectacular views and a beach that can only be seen in the movies. I recommend to anyone who has come to visit Crete to make for themselves and friends a trip to this spectacular beach. In the tourist season the beach is busy but on less touristy dates it is a dizzying experience!

** Extra bonus ** The beach is a nudist beach so if you are into the matter of tanning like on your birthday it is well worth a trip.

Very interesting ancient remains, but, judging from other comments, it's apparently better to come in summer. I was there in November and everything was closed (no guide, no taverna, no nothing). If you prefer exploring places on you own, then it's perfect, but guides' explanations could have been very useful.
The view from the top is great anyway.

All in all, it was a nice little insight to local culture and history. Personally I enjoyed he first floor more. Mosaics and numismatic parts were stunning. Nice place to spend 1-2hours while in Kissamos

This is a bit of a strange one. These clay "pyramids" seem to just rise out of the ground. Access is free and, although there are signs to get you close, there was a bit of guesswork in finding the path that lead us to the right place. Another guidebook had warned us that, in spring, we might find ourselves wading through soggy clay. However, all was dry when we visited. We did see one other couple while we were there but this didn't see particularly popular

9k each way in the blazing sun with no shops of toilets along the way. Not for the faint hearted. Gorgeous cliffside walk to a lovely little historical village. The handmade wooden craft shop is delightful. The owner can't do enough for you, such a wonderful man. Well worth a trip.

Good walk up the hill with a nice stop halfway to take a refreshment. The temperature is nice in the cave and the visit is agreeable. Don’t forget to have no slippery shoes and a lamp with you to explore it safely.

We were very warmly welcomed and showed around by the church clerk Maria, who speaks several languages. Also, there was church members gathering and they were all very warm.
    Architecture is very interesting.

It's an uphill pull to get to the castle ramparts at the top of the hill, but the stroll through the village is charming. Stop at the information point for a chat and a coffee, then head up to the church. At this point you can either chicken out and head downhill by a different path or continue for spectacular panoramas of the countryside down to the sea below.

Mavros Molos Beach is a quiet chilled sandy beach. There are shallow areas near the stones to the left when you look towards the sea (wave current protection), where kids can go into the water. People there are locals. Not many tourists. Not many people.:)
Water sport (Snackbars, Jet ski, Surfschool Kalosurf, SUP etc.) available. There is also a Basketballfield next to the beach. Very cool

Very cute relaxed area, clear water (depending wind current situation), if it is clear you can go snorkeling near the stones and see many fishes close to the beach

SUGGESTIONS: To discover the Northwest, West, Southwest -> Kissamos is perfect location to stay and to start your journeys. In addition you have a chill quiet beach in front of your nose. I am a huge fan of Kissamos. Love it. I stayed 2.5 weeks in 2019 July/August. I will definitely come back. The people here are very very kind. For example in touristic places sometimes you find this more "aggressive behavior" from the people working in front of bars etc, for the tourist-thing (money-wise, Malia style) if you know what I mean. Well here it is very peaceful. If you looking for party you should go to another place like Malia for example.

You may well drive past this cave church if you are not expecting it, it is on the west end of Kissamos on the road out of town, just after the small old town harbour, parking is at a premium but if you can stop here then it is well worth it.
The orthodox Greek church has an imposing frontage and the church is built into the rock face, it is very sparse inside but I guess provides all that is needed in such a place. To the right of the church is a small cave complex which has also been made into some kind of shrine or place of worship. Also in this area is a tunnel under the coast road which leads to the small rocky bay which appears to be popular with locals for taking a swim.
Worth making the effort to locate this place and visit.

A little bit way to the west of the town, this is a typical Greek village harbour and marina, small pleasure crafts and a few small fishing boats and a quay side restaurant offering nice views.
Worth a visit to soak up the more traditional Greek way of life.
