OK, so it has been entirly reconstructed and is not very large, on the other hand, it has an elevator and a really great view. It also has a nice little museum. The gardens are also quite nice. Overall, a visit to the castle is well worth the small effort to get there and the small price of admission.

Probably the most memorable attraction is the giant refrigerator--you can pose with giant foodstuffs in the freezing cold!!

The Yamagata snow monsters were spectacular -- they would be really frightening if they could move. We rode the main gondola to the mountain top and could see these monsters below us. We havew3 never seen anything quite like them. At the base we were able to buy Snow Monster Sake (delicious) and at the crest we were able to enjoy hot amazake (to take away the chill in the air and the chill of the snow monsters!)

Be sure to enter from the main road on the western side. We entered from route 51 on the eastern side which is possible but the lane narrows to a track before reaching the winery. The winery had a little shop. The shipping services were reasonable and with the heat hovering around 35'C it was best to let the professionals get it home than have it stew in the car.

Harausame’an is the home in exile of the Rinzai monk Takuan Sōhō from 1629 - 1632. The building was made especially for Takuan by the Lord of Kaminoyama-han and survives to this day. On site is also a small garden and tea house. Walls are built across the garden pond, which creates a lovely effect as the water stretches under the walls. Having long returned to Edo after his time in exile, one day in December 1645, Takuan took out his calligraphy tools and painted the character 夢 (Dream). Thereupon he set down his brush and peacefully died.
