Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is an extraordinary experience. It’s an opportunity to visit a nature reserve like no other. Brilliant tour guides and access on special buses means you get to see fantastic wildlife and also experience a pristine environment.

Fantastic range of machinery, tractors, tools, mining, household items, horse gear and implements from a bygone Era. A library and more. We were lucky enough to have someone arrive and talk to us about some of the items. I would recommend a tour as we got so much more info and enjoyment from this experience and they open areas otherwise locked.

There are a few things out this way that are worth the detour, and these rocks are one of them. Drop by on your way elsewhere, or stop for a while and enjoy the surrounds.

Whanganui Inlet (Westhaven) is a wildlife Management Reserve managed by DOC it also includes a Marine Reserve. It’s a drowned river valley on the north west top of the South Island. Basically head towards the famous Farewell Spit and hang a left. If you are worried about dust on your car, wear on your tyres, or care a great deal about the wear on your suspension this trip ain’t for you. Once on the gravel road you have a couple of options, turn back up north or carry on south. We went south the rede was in and we got to see the spectacular prehistoric bush surrounded by silky smooth waters. The ponga and rata where standouts. It was as if you were taking a step back in time. People still live out here in isolation I often kid myself I could but it’s a bit too quiet for me. There was to our great surprise a cafe The Nugget. A must stop for a a well earned caffeine break (for the driver). There is a twitcher amusement park near the end (closed) and a grand west coast foamy beach at the end. Good to see an unspoilt world, with very little traffic

The drive into the start of this track was spectacular as it is on hard-packed gravel roads that meander around the Whanganui Inlet. At low tide it is mainly mud-flats with channels creating interesting patterns while at hightide the reflection of light is magical. The walk itself is a steady climb up a disused 4 wheel drive track before getting to the gruntier section - the 20 minute scramble over rocks & through sub-alpine grasses, mosses etc. This last hard bit is definitely worth it as the view over the Whanganui Inlet & beyond to the Tasman Sea is truly stunning. The walk back down was a bit tricky as it had rained the day before so the ground was a bit slippery so be prepared with sturdy tramping boots.
Recommend you take walking pole(s), plenty of water & a light lunch as well as wet weather gear (in case the rain comes in). Check out the DOC information about this trail.

If I had a complaint it would be that the place needed to be bigger as it was really interesting but not enough of it. Also the adzes had no information available for us to read.

This shop, that we heard about from others, is like a small museum and time capsule , bringing memories of growing up in the 1950's. We enjoyed a chat with the friendly proprietor who we understand is part of the family the originally started the store., Soak up the rural atmosphere. We definitely would visit again if we return to Collingwood.

I did the 3.5 hours trek and I loved it, the views were amazing, the guides very capable and friendly. The trek is very varied, going through the beach, up a hill, and in different terrains. Absolutely recommend!

We took the very early choice of the 6. 30am day. So we travelled with the sun coming up. Our guide Alan was outstanding. His knowledge and enthusiasm was infectious. He made us love the various birds and their behaviours and entertained us with humorous stories. The coffee and muffin at the lighthouse came with a history story of early life at the lighthouse and the incredible changes due to technology. The 6 hour trip was fun, educational and worth every cent.
