About
At Gannet Bikes we provide you with the opportunity to explore Cape Kidnappers on a Fat Bike. Cycle along this special coastline, along a sandy, gravelly and rocky beach, next to striking cliffs showing the different layers of geology. Towards the end of the beach you’ll come across our amazing gannet colonies. This is a nature trip with a bit of fun and exercise thrown in. If you've never ridden a Fat Bike before, get ready to smile....they're a lot of fun.

Fat bikes are the best way to visit Cape Kidnappers gannet colony. The bikes were in excellent condition and super fun to ride along the beach at low tide.
Murray met us and gave a quick safety briefing.
Took an hour and a bit each way.
Baby gannets at the top of the cliff were a nice reward.

Was a bit worried about how hard this might be...I'm on holiday afterall! Was in fact an easy ride for most of it that with moderate fitness saw us out there in an hour and back in under 45 with a warming wine calling. Bikes were easy to ride and bounced over everything. Shoes and shorts got wet as were ahead of dead low but was no biggee. The hike up to the colony was harder than the bike but again totally doable at your own pace on a good clear track. Seeing the masses of gannets and their babies was a lot more spectacular than just seeing them circling above so worth hiking a hill for. Tide was lower on way back and with no wind the bikes really got flying. Was nice on bikes as we had total freedom on how fast to go and when and where to stop.

Great experience and so awesome biking along the beach on the fat bikes. Easier than expected and amazing scenery. Murray was great in setting us up and sending us on our way. The gannets at the end were also very cool!! A very special and unique experience. Highly recommended!!

Wow, what an awesome experience! The fat tyre bikes were brilliant on the beach, and they floated too when we had to negotiate some knee-deep water. Riding through the waves was cool and the gannets at the halfway point were great to see. This is truly a unique experience! Be prepared to be on the bikes for 60 minutes each way and another 60 minutes for the walk. So take some snacks and lots of water.

The early start to coincide with the tide was absolutely worth it. Having collected our bikes at the arranged time, we were given all the necessary information, including a map, then set off along the beach.
The beach ride was awesome, sand, rocky shore and the odd far reaching wave included. Dress prepared to get at least your feet wet (if not more) it’s 99% certain you will and it adds to the experience!
The walk up to the gannet colony was pretty steep however even those of us with dodgy knees made it there and back without issue.

What a great way to spend half day day. Absolutely loved the scenic ride along to coast to the gannet colony. The views from the top of cape kidnappers made the uphill walk worth the effort.
It was a seamless process from beginning to end, an experience well recommended.

I booked my visit for February, knowing that the juvenile Takapu would not have left yet for Australia. Being mid-summer I also booked a day with an early start to beat the worst of the heat. Due to fairly strong winds pushing the tide higher than normal Murray got me permission from the camp owner to begin with a dry shortcut for my 7.30am start. I wasn't sure what to expect from the bike, having never ridden one before. They steer a bit like a bus, but will go over almost anything and are great fun. In a couple of spots I had to resort to getting my feet wet, but managed to keep riding through the incoming water with no problems. I managed to enjoy about 90 minutes at the colony before any other people arrived after having spent a cruisy 45 minutes to bike to the start of the one kilometre walking track. The colony itself is much like a mad miniature airport and the birds have no fear of humans so will come quite close to you. I had been warned that the colony is very smelly, but on a breezy day I didn't really notice. The return ride to Clifton was more enjoyable with the lower tide and the bike was perfectly in its element out here. A wonderful morning well spent and I will definitely be back.

This is a fantastic bike ride. The scenery is amazing. I was well prepared for the ride by Murray and the bike I rode made the ride so easy. I would recommend this adventure to any competent rider seeking a new adventure. Well worth the walk up to the plateau gannet colony.

Murray was great, good intro to bikes and advice on what to do and what we may encounter.
Ride was excellent and our private viewing of the colony was amazing.
Would recommend this to anyone with a reasonable level of fitness.
Thanks Murray.
