Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The walk to the dam is stunning: the trees and other plants, the fantails, the water in its various cascades and rivulets.

Unfortunately, most of the pedestrians use the path for running and power-walking. As the track is very narrow in places, this leads to constant awkward passing manoeuvres.

The DOC website said that this walk was at the 'Easiest' level. However, I have to say that that was not accurate. The final ascent to the dam is steep and involves climbing about 40 steps.

If you can somehow manage to find a time when the track is not overcrowded with athletes, you will have a lot of pleasure in the cool forest with its sounds and sights.

There are plenty of car park at the beginning start point. Then walk a few meters to the start of Waterworks walk. Options are from short relax walk - the Waterworks work, to the next medium more endurance walk, the Summit View Tower, and the longest serious walks, to Waingaro Road (4 hours), and to Parker Road 6-7 hours). The Waterworks work is the easiest and relax walk for 25-30 minutes return walk. It is nice track between native tress and the sound of birds. Expect some stairs, however the track is good and well maintained.

Been meaning fro a while to do this walk, and finally on New Years Day 2019 we did! It's a nice easy 30 minute walk in to the old dam built in 1922, easy track and some steps. It starts of a wide track in and slowly the bush gets better and thicker and you walk mostly by a small stream. It's a wonderful little walk and enjoyable

It's advertised as a 2 hr walk up & down to the Lookout Point; but it can be done in under 90 mins, if you have a reasonable level of fitness. Yep - there are a heck of a lot of steps - but the track is well maintained. Nice clean toilets at the start.

I love taking a stroll up here. I have never gone up for the sake of checking out the waterworks or dam, I go strictly for the workout - the surroundings and view is a bonus.

It can get really busy (where I am considering walking the end nearer to Waingaro) but the people are all friendly and generally courteous.

Be mindful of yourself and others and be careful of slippery areas. Kids go up, parents carry up babies, older ones are up there - it's a real mix of good sorts :)

This is a great walk for adults, tamariki, whanau. It is truly a pleasant walk with natures background of the native trees, native birds, flora and fauna. It has become very popular, and more recently has extra parking and a restroom.

Love to see a puddle of water in the middle of the forest?
Like to see a concrete wall / also known as a dam / in the middle of the forest? ie wwater works?
Brackish waters running all around and you somehow like this?
Come on down if those boxes are for you. DOC can do something better for this place Im sure.

Gorgeous spot for a walk or run - you can even carry heavy bags of gravel up if you're crazy enough!!

It's a lovely spot now that the council have improved the parking and built a modern toilet for the many visitors.

Beautiful bush walk up around 1350 stairs to a height of around 335m at the summit. It is a good physical challenge for most.

Very well constructed stairs and track means you can "race" if you want to. They also have bags of gravel (for the track) that can be carried up for an extra challenge if you want. This also helps maintain the track which is a very clever idea!!

Great views from the top - a really nice viewing tower has been constructed at the summit which adds to the "victory" when you get there.

Allow 60 mins if you are pretty unfit. A fairly quick walk will knock it off in 30 mins ... I've done it in 22mins to the top and managed to run back down in 13!!

I love coming here and so do many others.
Wonderful walk for everyone!
