About
Trail Journeys has operated on the popular Otago Central Rail Trail (New Zealand's Original Great Ride) since the rail trail began in 2000. We’ve helped thousands of independent travellers put together great tour itineraries tailored to their special interests, budgets and time constraints. We are Qualmark certified meaning you can be assured of a quality experience in all aspects of your tour. With depots at both ends of the trail, a large fleet of specifically developed bikes, vans and buses and experienced drivers and guides, we make your journey on our Rail Trail comprehensive and effortless. While cycling might form the core activity on your tour, we can incorporate other activities such as Motorsport, 4WD adventures, Curling, Farm visits and many more. As well as operating on the famous Otago Central Rail Trail we also operate on the Queenstown Trails, Roxburgh Gorge Trail & Clutha Gold Trail all with their own unique beauty and history.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We encountered an issue with our ebike batteries after charging them to a full 5 bars in Ophir at the overnight accommodation following the first day ride (41 kms). On the 2nd Day's ride, within 10 minutes we were both reduced to 4 bars of charge and by the time we reached Oturehua (33kms) we were down to 2 bars. Confident we were not going to make the entire 61km journey to Kokonga, and considering the bikes were heavy, I rang the Clyde depot for some assistance only to be told to approach a local venue and offer to pay them a couple of dollars to charge the bikes! I asked about a spare battery and if the shuttle drivers carry them only to be told there are no spare batteries only the ones that come with the bikes. We approached the local general store who could no longer assist with charging due to insurance. Thankfully, we found one other local business that was open and very helpful in getting us out of a sticky situation. Pretty disappointing service from Trail Journeys. Not even an apology. We were told to fully charge the bikes at Kokonga that night, check them before going to bed, check them again in the morning and call in if there were any further issues. What has happened to customer service TJ? Not even a follow up call to find out how we got on. There are many other operators on the trail and it seems that customer service has gone astray on this occasion, perhaps because your company is too busy.

We booked well in advance for 4 days in the Otago Central Rail Trail. TJ took care of all our bookings E bikes, accommodation and meals for some nights. The E bikes were of a high standard (Sinch) and we were provided with puncture repair kits, pannier bags, all charging equipment. Before we set off we were given a comprehensive explanation of how everything worked.
All accommodation was of a high standard. Unfortunately we were double-booked for 1 night but this was remedied with no inconvenience.
One of the local pubs had closed between when we booked and when we travelled which we only discovered by accident. This could have proved a difficulty if we hadn't found out in advance.
Service was very thorough and friendly.

We did the Lake Dunstan trail and were very satisfied with our trip. The staff from the biking shelter were very friendly and helpful, the bikes were really good and the sceneries along the track were very beautiful. We expected the trail to be generally flat, but this was not the case. The second half of it was often challenging but really rewarding. Thanks for the nice experience!

Trail Journeys is a great company to work with for a ride on the Central Otago Rail Trail. Advance communications were clear and timely. We stopped by the evening before our ride and had an enjoyable chat with some staff members, who told us everything we needed to know, even though it was past working hours. On the day, we got briefed and onto our bikes quickly. The bikes were great, and we had a good 3-day ride. Logistics were all perfectly organized - essential when you're staying in really small places like Lauder and Waipiata. We would wholeheartedly recommend Trail Journeys for anyone interested in riding the trail.

Fantastic day even given the drizzle. Started at Smith's Way and enjoyed the coffee stop at the Cromwell Heritage precinct and another stop at the Winery on way. Even though I pushed the EB to the max, the cycle from the rowing club to the base in Clyde was relatively benign. My wife managed the full journey no trouble with power to spare.

our recent 3 day bike trip was a fitting end to 3 weeks in New Zealand. The trip was exceptional from start to finish. we were well coached on both the e-bikes and the trail before we left the starting point. at the end, we received a friendly reception and then were driven to Dunedin. The trail itself is breathtaking and the accommodation & eating spots were different and fun.

We did the Otago Central Trail with them. Great logistics from lodging to luggage and transportation. Very organized. Excellent materials. Bikes in excellent condition. Bike check-in and fitting was great. They gave us different bikes than originally reserved to better meet our needs - no questions or problems. The only issue is make sure you pay attention to what lodging assignments you get so you are not surprised. The Otago trail is great with variety each day. The Lake Dunstan trail is unforgettable.

Thanks everyone at Trail Journeys for a fantastic experience. The 3 Gorges trip was the perfect way to see the spectacular scenery in the Otago area. We cannot praise the staff at Trail Journeys highly enough. Everyone was intent on us being safe and comfortable on the bike trip and the friendliness of all staff was a standout.
Thanks, Sue, for organising our itinerary and going over the first day with us and Rebecca for her information on the next two days.
Thanks to the drivers Paddy, Ray and Keith for the safe pickups and valuable background information about the area. Thanks to your bike mechanic Steve, who ensured the bikes were in top notch condition.
Overall, a very memorable experience and we will be recommending Trail Journeys to our friends.

We picked up our e-bikes in Cromwell at their office at Highlands Racetrack. good training on how to use them and fitted to our size. Loved the tour of the loos at Highlands, , you so have to do it and see the urinals!!!’ Track was amazing, we had coffee on the way, but took our own beautiful bread rolls purchased from French Bakery in Frankton. We stopped at Rowing course on lake for lunch. Track was easy, we were 4 sisters of different ability but all about the same on an ebike. We had a beautiful Pinot Noir at Olivers in Clyde, walked around the town so cute, and went to their office in Clyde and were transported back to Cromwell as were staying in Queenstown. Took us about 3 hours with heaps of stops. Being Autumn the colours were amazing.
