Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We came purposely to view the herons, but we came too early around 8:30am. Herons will come at rising of the tide around noon. Since we had to move on, we did not wait but the serene and tranquil scenery already had our jaws dropped. Boat rides would start around 10am, so absolutely there were no people around, we had the place all to ourselves, what a little heaven. If you are looking for something, there is nothing around except one old beaten up shack, but the scenery will wow you! The reflection of the clouds and the mountain was a dream, so peaceful and awesome. Please come and enjoy God's creation, it a must!

We decided to drive the13 km road to Lagoon Okarito....just after the township if you travel to Fox Glacier. It was the best decision we made drove straight up to it and no need for a long walk to get to it if you are not able to.
The place is beautiful and I geuss not many people know about it as there were a few people.... ( not like lake matheson were it is very touristy) put it on your list

Took the side trip into Okarito again. Normally it's later in the year, but we did again. It's a quiet little village, which on the high tide has some lovely views of the lagoon and walks both long and short. An information shed on the wharf will give you a bit of history of Gold mining in the area.

But alas, it was very low tide, and the only birds sighted were pukekos and the introduced blackbird.
There are walks in the area and as nothing was happening in the lagoon we went for a quick walk to the beach and lo and behold a very large pod of Hector dolphins cavorting close and far from the shore.

Large, relatively undisturbed wetlands with magnificent sea and alpine views, full of birdlife. For the energetic it's close to some real altitude (e.g. at Franz Joseph), a wild coast and interesting bush.

The lagoon is a habitat for many native birds including the White heron/kōtuku. There is a breeding colony close by and the adults visit this area for food for young. Other native birds can be found in the area include fernbirds, paradise ducks, banded dotterills on the beach along with lots of tuis.
Accommodation I used was through the Okarito Boat Tours, as the name suggests they also do tours on the lagoon in a flat bottomed boat. There is a variety of sizes available
My visit was part of a photography group. Great place for sunsets over sea reflected back on mountains. Board walk at start of track could be used by wheelchair

We visited the lagoon on a crisp but sunny day and discovered why this is such a special place for Coasters. The lagoon is one of the beautiful places on the coast. The beach is a great place to wander along and there are many other lovely walks. It is well worth spending some time looking through the historic wharf building and learn about the history of the area.

Weather conditions for us were excellent & we saw a number of Kotuku, some very close, but visitors must be quiet and remain aware of their surroundings if they are to see these elusive birds

We pre booked for a cruise of the lagoon with Okarito Eco Boat Tours but were a bit downhearted to find the morning misty and with squally showers. Now that we had paid we may as well grin and bear it. Needless to say we were the only tow, apart from the guide, in the open boat. As we were taken across the lagoon our guide gave us a history of the area, it's size and it's diversity. The lagoon is home to the great white heron among others and even in these poor weather conditions we were able to see them feeding on the mud flats. Other species seen included royal spoonbill, Caspian tern and pied stilt. The weather did clear up during our return to the moorings so all in all the two hour cruise was not a total washout.

Yet another great stop on our fantastic journey. Very sleepy little village. Special views. Go for a quick walk on the beach and feel the charm of the area
