We decided to take the car to the top, and we don’t recommend that to anyone. Road is paved but narrow and with holes that would damage most cars. And we were really lucky to not meet any cars going the opposite direction, because that would have been a nightmare backing up or very narrowly passing each other. So, our recommendation is to take the trails and hike up there. Once you are up there the view over the coast, seaside and mountains is very beautiful. The gate to the chapel at the very top was closed, so we didn’t get to see that part.

The views from Profitis Ilias Church is amazing and well worth the winding road up.

The road is not for the faint of heart, and once you chose to go up, there is no turning back except at the chapel. But the view.....outstanding. The chapel is beautifully maintained and you feel the richness of the decor.

We went up this week. The 'road' is a military concrete road for use by the operators of the adjacent communications towers. It is at best one small car wide with hairpin bends and almost all the way you will need to select first gear. It is the steepest continual road I have ever been up. Not to mention the sheer drops of the side. The view is fantastic, but the drive is not for the faint hearted. Also, once you start up, there is only one place to turn around until you get to the chapel, the gates of which were shut when we went. Open the gates and turn around inside.

On the road connecting Gythio and Areopoli, just few Km before you arrive in Areopolis (Laconia, Greece) and some hundred of meters before you see the monument for Mani you might see on your left an iron door that closes the area used by the locals as scrap heap or/and pastureland for goats. Behind this door starts a difficult and narrow road that ends on the peak of the mountain above Areopolis. Once you reach the Peak with your car the magnificent view of the coasts of Southern Peloponnese and its villages will reward you. In a clear day (suggested to be there morning hours) you can see as far as Kalamata and Skala. You can watch the wild beautiful scenery, see the little chapel of Profitis Ilias and even spot/discover some ruined castles in the nearby area. Some years ago the door leading to the peak was unlocked only for some days around 20th of July but now is unlocked more and more often. Once you have passed the gate please close it and be careful with the road.

Please do not take the road by car!!! We tried it 2 weeks ago and our car was overheated in the middle of the road on the Mountain. It was very hot and the road is really steep and (to be honest) our car was not an off-road vehicle... the vehicle switched off and the hand-break was not able to hold the car by it own... so we were sitting inside the car for quite a long time at over 40 degrees outside temperature...
The consequence: Backwards up the hill ( during that we also got stuck due to stones on the street) - it took us several nervs and I was really scared. I will never ever drive again by car to a hill by usage of an unofficial road.

The Mani Peninsula is a difficult area to explore due to the mountainous landscape. One of the options to try to see the whole thing, even from a distance, is the mountain of the prophet Elijah. From above, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the amazing mountain scenery. In good weather, in the morning hours, you can even see Kalamata, which is tens of kilometers away. The сhurch itself, of course, is not visually interesting and looks like an optional addition to the actual observation deck. The road is not easy, and it is better for an unprepared person to use a car.
