I was disappointed with this location as compared to other similar hikes I did on my trip (Bridal Veil Falls, Kauri Loop, Mangakara Nature Walk, Wairere Falls, etc). The gravel road to get there is very narrow with lots of washboard. GPS had trouble figuring...More

We visited Te Toto Gorge Lookout after watching the surfers at Whale Bay. Take the gravel road up Whaanga Road for about 15 minutes to this amazing lookout that gives stunning rural views of farm land with sea vistas north to Port Waikato and South...More

The road there is unsealed and quite narrow - you can't pass other cars in some places, with lots of tight blind corners. But if you enjoy a challenging drive, you are not alone as this road was actually on the course for the Rally...More

A bit of a whindy drive to reach the lookout, however it is definitely worth the view. Past the viewing platform is just a straight drop. I would recommend maybe tethering any valuables and being extra careful, as if you drop something then you can...More

Amazing lookout over the ocean and beach below. Small parking area that seems to be used for hiking trails that are several hours long. This lookout is a short path away from the parking. Road is very windy and gravel, but in good condition.

Take a picnic and watch the sun set over the Tasman sea, as the light changes everything in the gorge will glow green, quite spectacular to watch. loved the drive out and back.

Highly recommend making the drive out there. Road is a little windy and you have to watch for oncoming traffic but worth the drive. Views were amazing. Make sure you also walk the path (you'll notice where the grass has been trodden down) at the...More

Scary and bleak on a windy day but well worth the drive to see it. Narrow, winding but very scenic road into DOC land area. Look out platform is accessed by a well trodden track over grassland. The platform is sturdy. The drop down from...More

The road is narrow and winding and needs attention when driving. But this is an amazing drive, a real hidden treasure. The road winds up and around the side of the volcano Karioi until it reaches Te Toto gorge, where long ago an eruption blasted...More

Hi Ellen. The lookout is only 100m from the road. When you are on the lookout, it seem like a gazillion miles drop to the beach. The lookout is reasonably well marked off the Whanga Coast Road. This is a metal road from just... More
