My boyfriend and I did a 2 days of lessons with Steve and were so impressed with this school. Steve is a great teacher and teaches you technique to allow you to progress, rather than just aiming for you to stand up. He gets into the water and gives you feedback as you are surfing and takes photos so you can see what you look like, as well as to have as a souvenir. After 2 lessons with Steve we felt confident enough to hire beginner boards and surf ourselves in different parts of NZ.

My family and I had a great time learning how to surf! Steve taught us everything we need to know to learn how to surf. I skate but I've never surfed before and I really wanted to learn! This lesson was worth every cent! My family was at completely different levels, and he still found a way to teach us and allow us to have fun! At the beginning you watch a video that gets you mentally ready for surfing. Then you go down to the beach and check out the water! Raglan is one of the best places to surf in the WORLD! We then stretched and started going through the motions. At the end the goal is to ride at least one wave and he does a really good gob meeting that! If you want to go surfing in the area, choose him because he gives you real customer service and individual attention compared to the big surf companies!

I booked 3 kids (aged 8,10 and 12 yrs) for a 3 hour morning surf lesson with Steve. We chose him over other outfits as he had wetsuits sizes suitable for kids. He was able to fit all 3 kids (including small 8 yr old) into appropriate wetsuits (2 lasers for younger 2) and they all stayed warm the whole time. They had had 2 previous surf lessons each elsewhere (Hawaii and Tutukaka) but this was by far the best lesson they have had. Good advice to prepare. The educational video and beach foundational skills were comprehensive so that once they were in the water, he had all 3 up on their boards pretty quickly. The kids really loved their lesson with him, and are keen to go back.

I have just completed a four day surfing course with Steve .
I am really happy I spent those four days under Steves guidance .
Technically very very good . Steve can pinpoint any flaws that you might have and get you to focus on one or two things that will make all the difference in your surfing .
I would highly recommend Steve to anybody who has their heart set on learning to surf .

It takes a specific combination of knowledge, experience, expertise, and passion to teach someone a new skill. Without hesitation, I can say that Steve has it all when it comes to teaching the art of surfing. He has an outstanding ability to bring you into the surfing world. His passion is endless. And, his patience, motivation, and insight are inspiring. He is constantly analyzing, refining, and perfecting your skill so that you can not just surf but enjoy surfing. His one-on-one guidance and ability to adapt to your level and body mechanics are only part of his teaching prowess. His instruction and training lays the foundation for one to embark upon a lifetime of surfing.
Raglan is truly an amazing place to learn how to surf, and there are many surf schools there. Most live by their pledge to get you to stand on a board in the water. However, Steve's goal is open you to this new and breathtaking world of surfing.

I build up coaching & teaching knowledge and experience thanks to my professional background and my recently gained ski instructor training & exam experiences.
The Tripadvisor reviews made me, a first time surfer, signing up for 4 days private course with Surf Safe and Steve as my coach.
Steve is an excellent surfing instructor:
- he develops your surf skills from simple to complex manner
- Steve constantly analyses your level & movements
- safety and security are paramount important (no worries, Steve will teach you the mandatory rules right from the start)
- Steve checks for your understanding (new learned skills, board, how to read a weather report for surfing purposes,…)
- he presents the information (surf technique, safety,…) visually, aurally and even kinesthetic (= what -and where- you should feel when you do certain movement)
- and depending on your progression he will challenge you to learn new skills & try out new circumstances!
I really appreciate Steve’s passion for surfing and the sea: he genuinely wants you to learn and enjoy surfing!

BEST SURF SCHOOL IN RAGLAN. My boyfriend and I were at a low/intermediate surfing level - able to get up on a wave pretty easily but not able to do much more. This is where Steve came in! He quickly taught us how to turtle roll to get outback, get up on some pretty big waves out there and how to accelerate and start into turns. He also identified and rectified some of our bad surfing habits by showing us photos of ourselves as we were in the water.
Working with Steve for 2 days proved how dedicated, hard-working and passionate he is about what he does. Not only will he arrange to have you out in the best possible conditions (which can't be said for some of the other schools in Raglan), he also takes into account injury prevention with comprehensive warm up drills and makes sure you're confident with safety procedures for the inevitable wipeouts. And prevents fatigue with cookies!! Can't wait to go back for more surf coaching with Steve!

Had a great couple of hours surfing with Steve. He really knows his stuff and was very knowledgeable. The class size was small so Steve was able to really concentrate on giving individual advice and coaching. We were both were standing up and surfing by the end of the lesson. 🤙

My girlfriend & I are doing a whirlwind NZ tour & decided to stop in Raglan to try our hand at surfing, so we set up a lesson with Steve and could not be happier! Not only was he kind and super passionate about the sport, he's an EXCELLENT teacher! My hope was for each of us to get up on the board long enough for a photo, but by the end of our lesson we each had surfed in all the way from the shore at least a dozen times, & Steve took 70 photos of us looking good doing it!
