We took 3 days of surfing and we learned the basics. However more practice is required. Safe surfing is a big priority for Steve. He has a good approach and unique teaching style.

My boyfriend and I did a 2 days of lessons with Steve and were so impressed with this school. Steve is a great teacher and teaches you technique to allow you to progress, rather than just aiming for you to stand up. He gets into the water and gives you feedback as you are surfing and takes photos so you can see what you look like, as well as to have as a souvenir. After 2 lessons with Steve we felt confident enough to hire beginner boards and surf ourselves in different parts of NZ.

My family and I had a great time learning how to surf! Steve taught us everything we need to know to learn how to surf. I skate but I've never surfed before and I really wanted to learn! This lesson was worth every cent! My family was at completely different levels, and he still found a way to teach us and allow us to have fun! At the beginning you watch a video that gets you mentally ready for surfing. Then you go down to the beach and check out the water! Raglan is one of the best places to surf in the WORLD! We then stretched and started going through the motions. At the end the goal is to ride at least one wave and he does a really good gob meeting that! If you want to go surfing in the area, choose him because he gives you real customer service and individual attention compared to the big surf companies!

I had a one-on-one lesson with Stephen at Surf Safe after it was suggested by our Air BnB host. I'd had two surf lessons previously but hadn't been able to stand up on a board. Stephen is very thorough and aware of safety, which I really valued after a previous sporting injury I'd had. I was pushed out of my comfort zone without feeling uncomfortable. The lesson was great value as it was around three hours of teaching. Stephen was very patient and I stood up on the board and was riding the waves. Goal achieved! I would recommend Surf Safe and I'm glad I went with a smaller, personal operator over the surf schools with large classes. It was ace!

Very great experience! Stephen was a very good teacher and have all the equipment your need. Very kind and make effort to be understandable even if You are fluent in English. Thank you so much !

Had a brilliant time on a 3 hour surfing lesson with Steve. He made it fun but ensured i was safe at all times. Was able to stand up and ride waves quickly after his detailed coaching. Highly recommend Surf Safe if you are looking to learn how to surf in Raglan!!

It was such a good and lovely day, Steve is a really great instructor. Everything was clear and the safety of the cours was nice. I really recommande this coach for Learn surf and have a great time.

Cheers Steve for a couple of days coaching Charlie and Freddie. Would recommend and definitely come back, Fred especially wants to come back so you can take him out the back! Lesson was actual tracing rather than board and suit hire.

Having already been to a different surf school in Raglan, I wanted some more attention than the usual bigger groups. Steve actually works on your technique way more than the bigger schools as he only has small groups. He really knows his stuff and helped me catch waves much better than previously. This is an actual surf lesson instead of the usual “get you stood up on a board for pictures”, would highly recommend!

Surf safe was a great small business offering small class sizes, and personalized coaching. We had a group lesson booked with Steve and only had one other person in the class. He was able to provide specific feedback to help everyone stand up on the boards and take fantastic pictures while doing so! Definitely recommend over some of the larger surf schools in town.
