I stayed 6 days in Selous National Park (in non-hunting area). The landscape of the park is beautiful and varied; it is mainly bushy savannah surrounding Rufiji river, and there are several small lakes where animals come to drink. The fauna in Selous is exceptionnal. In the park, during safaris, we have seen:
- lions, leopards,
- packs of African wild dogs: I was very happy because it was the first time that I cound see these fantastic animals
- spotted hyenas, black-backed jackals
- other mammals, e.g.: zebras, giraffes, buffalos, gazelles, waterbucks, warthogs…
- a lot of birds.
Taken together, I highly recommend to visit Selous National Park

Me and my wife we went 4 days in the Selous Game Reserve. I would strongly advise anyone travelling to Tanzania to go there, it's a beautiful place full of animals and vegetation. Moreover, I would like to spend two words about the tour operator that we took, Kanuth Adventures. Tarimo's organisation of the safari was simply perfect: he took care of every detail, such as the better places where to make breakfast in the park or the timetable of the different events (game drive, boat safari, walk safari...). Furthermore, compared with the tour operator we took in the parks of the North, his prices are affordable (compared to what he offers, I can say that his prices were more than fair). He is not on any book guide only because he opened his agency since few years, but he is totally relyable. Have a nice trip to all! Gianluca

If you want a safari experience without the crowds you sometimes see at the more well-known reserves then Selous Game Reserve is for you. When it was first suggested to us by Audley Travel, we had to look it up, even though it is one of the largest reserves in Africa. The place was deserted – very occasionally we would pass another vehicle and only a couple of times did we end up alongside 2 or 3 other vehicles.
Landing by light airplane at the edge of the park (Mtemere) is an experience in itself, only enhanced by having to abort the landing at the last moment because of Giraffes on the airstrip. Then within 10 mins of the airstrip we ran right into a herd of 10-15 elephants (not literally ) – a good omen for the rest of the stay. Over the next 3 days (not enough) we saw several herds of elephants, uncountable impala, loads of giraffe, kudo, water buffalo, zebra and wildebeest with the highlight being two separate packs of wild dogs (apparently very rare). Our only disappointment was the unexpected lack of big cats – we only saw two separate pairs of lions throughout the whole stay.
Weather was great (August) – dry with good viewing conditions. Waterholes were drying out which made for good viewing of the pelicans having a feast on the stranded fish. Conversely the Rufiji River was flowing well (not flooded) so we saw loads of hippos and crocs on the two boat trips we did (the final one back to the airstrip).
Our one reservation when we booked was that we had heard that of the 50 odd “lots” making up the reserve, only three are for “photographic” safaris with the rest for hunting. But our worries were unfounded, the three “lots” were all we needed and I doubt we even covered a fraction of this area.
If tranquillity and isolation is what you are after then Selous is for you.

We spent three days driving safari in Selous with our superb driver, Fadhili, from Kearsleys in Dar Es Salaam. Because the Reserve is vast with relatively few visitors, the prey animals cautious, so more natural. The lions could care less, of course. So many curious giraffes, many shore birds, rollers and bee eaters. Interesting early morning walking safari with Selous Riverside Safari Camp director and guide and late afternoon boat ride on the Rufiji: saw dugouts, crocodiles, fishermen, swimmers, a fish eagle, several species of kingfisher, and a beautiful sunset.

I was overwhelmed by all the animals we were able to see. I had been hoping to see some, but we saw a lot, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, even four lions resting under a tree and a mother elephant and her baby.

Part of a trip arranged by Audley Travel. Travel by light aircraft from Dar es Salaam (only 45 minutes). Very welcoming, friendly and helpful staff. Good facilities, with plunge pools for some of the rooms which have a view over the river. Good local food. Safaris very interesting (car, river and walking) and enjoyable - well-informed guides (I must mention Verence specifically re the car tour - he was just amazing). Truly recommendable.

We had a very nice and relaxing time in Selous, following a rather intense 3-week Safari in other parts of Tanzania and SA. Jeff and Ilse are wonderful hosts, and they have an amazing staff. Our only regret was that we were only booked for 2 nights. We would have loved to be able to enjoy this treasure for a few more days. We highly recommend this camp for a relaxing time at the end of your journey to Tanzania.

Our time spent at Selous was simply amazing. From having dinner with the bush babies, to dipping in the pool next to Giraffes!!! I kid you not, for 4 days we were totally immersed in countryside and animals. We only saw a couple of other jeeps one of our 4 1/2 days whilst adventuring.

For me Selous game reserve is the boat ride up the river, firstly to get out of the heat, secondly to see the wildlife. I think to drive in thje game reserve as pointless since, animals are hard to see and there are much better parks in Tanzania to go to. The advantage of Selous is that one can drive offroad. You could drive all day in Selous and see only a giraf and an antelope. Close by the gate not by the airport are the elefant familie which is worth looking at. They stay close by the gate since they are scared of poachers. I would go to selous for the boat ride up the river and not the game drive for safari photos.

The only park we saw wild dogs at and kudos. We went to every park in Tanzania and did not see except here. The best part of this park is there is not a lot of tourists so you go around not seeing anyone which is fantastic. All the other parks there is tourists everywhere. I would definitely come back here. The luxury tent camp we stayed was perfect. The tents are huge with patios to sit out and you are next to river where hippos come up at night. Cool!

hello, sorry for the disturbance, about the Selous safari I wanted to ask you if you have made anti-malarial prophylaxis or not.
I'm asking for some info about it to get a general idea. Thank you for the reply you will send me.

Ciao nessun disturbo figurati.
Sì ho fatto la profilassi antimalarica, come sempre quando vado in Africa perché trovo assurdo rischiare di prendere la malaria quando è sufficiente prendere una pastiglia
Buon viaggio!!!

We are a family with kids from daresslaam , kindly advise how to reach selous by road and also accomodations ?
Written 13 October 2015
Hi,You can reach to Selous by road through the public buses or private car. The buses to selous start from Tandika and ends at Mloka Village which is the last village before you inter to the park. With buses it may take you about 8 hour driving and with private car its about 5-6 hour driving. Note that this local buses are so crowded so as you are traveling with kids I will advice you to take private car to be more comfortable.
In selosu there is many accommodation options depend on your budget.

Hi there, Does anyone know of a 4WD car hire place in Morogoro?
We want to drive down to Selous for around five days in late July. If we could drop the vehicle off in Dar es Salaam, even better. Any ideas?
