About Good Heavens
Good Heavens offer stargazing experiences on Aotea Great Barrier Island, a remote treasure island of spectacular beauty, 1/2 hrs flight from Auckland. Experiences take place in beautiful spots, often close to the ocean. Dark Sky Sanctuary status ensures certified magnificent skies, and a subtropical climate ensures warmer stargazing than elsewhere in NZ. Cosy and comfortable stargazing experiences allow you to absorb the moment, the stories and the stars. Special touches include blankets, moon chairs, hot chocolate, home baked brownies and hot water bottles in the middle of winter. Small groups (max. 12) ensure a personalised experience, so that you can hear your guide and ask questions if you want to. Guides may deviate from a standard script if the interest of the group requires this and there is time and space for an impromptu joke. Expect an entertaining and informative, yet relaxed and comfortable experience in a stunning environment. Come stargazing with Good Heavens.

Our Dark Sky experience started at 5 am on the sand dunes, at Matariki. We started earlier as our guide Deborah wanted to add in some deep sky viewing and also we were lucky enough to see all the planets lined up - which won't happen again till 2040. Although morning tours have not been something she has done much before, we really appreciated her thorough exposition about Matariki stars and the meaning of this hugely significant occasion. Although we were pretty well-informed there was such a lot we learned, despite patchy cloud cover. It was a magical place to be, even for those of us like us who were Aotea residents. As on a previous occasion the planning was meticulous with comfortable seating, and delicious snacks and drinks. To do this with our family was a special highlight and very rewarding experience

Spent five days on Great Barrier Island in May 2022. Great Barrier is the third Dark Sky Sanctuary in the world. We went stargazing with Deborah of Good Heavens. An incredible experience looking at constellations pointed out by Deborah and her laser pointer. The dark sky sanctuary of Great Barrier Island gives amazing clarity to the night sky. Deborah had a telescope set up to allow us to see the constellations with more detail. I loved that she was not only knowledgeable about the southern sky, but that she knows about Matariki, and told us where to look for the “Matariki stars” when they rise in June. She was able to answer many questions without hesitation. We went down to the beach and walked by the ocean. Deborah told us of the Maori legend of “Rona and the Moon”; I had forgotten that my dad used to tell this tale when I was little, when we had bonfires on the beach by our Bach. This made the evening more memorable for me. Her hot chocolate and brownie helped to keep the cold at bay. Her attention to detail is what makes this an outstanding experience; “moon chairs” to watch the stars from and stary throws added to the experience. If you are only going to Great Barrier this is the experience you need to have.

What an incredible experience sitting in our moon chairs rugged up and looking at constellations deftly outlined by Deb with her lazer pointer! The dark sky sanctuary of Great Barrier Island gives amazing clarity to the night sky. There were opportunities to see even more closely through a telescope set up on the beach. Just as we were beginning to feel the cold, hot chocolate and mini brownie were served to warm us up. Deb was so knowledgeable not only about astronomy but also about Maori mythology. We were given a lot of useful information and this was helpfully followed up by a detailed email the next day. Thanks Deb and Hilde for a wonderful exploration of the night sky!
