About Good Heavens
Great Barrier Island is one of only ten IDA Dark Sky Sanctuaries in the world. One of the darkest places in the world, guaranteed! Our night sky is amazingly dark as our light pollution is minimal. If you have never seen a sky without light pollution, you will be amazed by the clarity and the brightness of our stars, and the sparkle of the Milky Way. One of our enthusiastic Good Heavens guides is looking forward to taking you on a stargazing experience through this marvelous dark sky in a stunning island location. Having a private tour at your accommodation is another alternative. Use the naked eye, our dark-sky binoculars and an 8" telescope to take in the magic of the universe. Marvel at the brightest stars in the darkest sky and listen to their stories. The Good Heavens team are looking forward to meeting you under the Milky Way on Great Barrier Island, New Zealand.

We were incredibly lucky to see the Great Barrier night sky at its best with Good Heavens in July 2021. The skies cleared after an incredibly stormy day just before the evening kicked off. Hilde ran such a wonderful evening, from pointing out key stars and planets, to historical and maori storytelling, as well as keeping us warm and cosy on a winters night at the beach (including a perfectly timed hot chocolate!). Highlights for me was being able to see the rings of Saturn via the telescope, and the red star.. actually all the sights through the telescope were great. Recommend this tour when you're on Barrier - such a treat! And Hilde - thanks for keeping such a close eye on the weather for us - we were so lucky to get the great window of weather for the tour.

Thoroughly enjoyed this experience, great to be able to see the super-stars of the Dark Sky Sanctuary such as Saturn and its rings, Jupiter and its moons, shooting stars galore and many other wonders of the night. Brownies and hot chocolate were also off-the-planet!

Great time with Deborah at Medlands beach and an added bonus of Bioluminescence when the sky chose to be more difficult :)

Thank you for taking the time to review your evening under the stars with us. There is almost always something interesting to see on Medlands beach, even when clouds get in the way of the main attraction! Wishing you clear skies and sparkling seas. Deborah

If you love gazing up at the stars and are interested in knowing some info about what you are looking at, this stargazing experience is incredable and not to be missed. I learnt so much and most of it will not be forgotten. Deborah our guide had such an obvious passion for what she does and passes on her knowledge promptly and joyfully. Before going I thought alot of the info would go In one ear and out the other but to my surprise Deborah made it so interesting and humourous that it was easy to follow along and i found the whole experience just AWESOME! Thanks so much I will treasure the experience immensely.

A lovely way to spend an evening doing something different. Hilda our guide was lovely and very knowledgeable. We sat comfortably on provided padded seating and snuggly blankets. The view through the binoculars we all were given was amazing and Hilda pointed out what to look at with a laser pointer. The evening was rounded off by a hot chocolate, peppermint or pomegranate tea and a piece of chocolate brownie. We had the added bonus of seeing a couple of shooting stars and the space x trail of satellites which was amazing and looked like santa as it went up in the sky.

Thanks very much for taking the time to review us, Paanga. We provide comfi seating and blankets as we believe it's easier to enjoy the stars when you are snuggly and warm. All our tours are different, there is so much to see and there is often something unique to see in the sky. On your night we were lucky enough to see the Starlink satellite train. I am happy to hear you enjoyed your evening under the stars and would like to wish you many happy hours stargazing in the future, and of course, clear skies! Hilde
