Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Most beautiful and unique experience, knowing the stars as more than just specks of light in the night sky. Loved it would do it again

Russel was our guide. He gave us a thorough outlook of life on the Aotea. I feel so grateful I got to meet such a beautiful soul like Russel and listen to his adventures and the stories behind this beautiful piece of earth. I will visit the island again and will catch up with the crew at STAR TREK'S, they made it memorable for me and my family.

Benny our guide ( and co owner ) took us on a magical trek through a beautiful part of Great Barrier Island. Remote and wild, with a unique historical past, we were taken through the old Tram Line track which was operational in the early 1900s and used to transport huge Kauri trees along the treacherous mountain ridge and eventually down to the sawmill and off the island.
Benny’s knowledge of the area and the past was fantastic. He is a true Barrier local and his love and respect of this Island is visceral.
After a beautiful sustainably packaged, delicious lunch, with some local treats,we were collected by dinghy with Tony as our skipper.
We motored across a spectacular little bay to the old whaling station where Tony and his wife live aboard a 50 ft home built catamaran.
We enjoyed their company, knowledge and stories, while we sipped on tea made with kawakawa and learned about the now deduct Whaling and Mining industries on the island.
This is a trek that gives a greater connection and understanding to the island and it’s past.
I highly recommend it to anyone who is fascinated to see the endeavour of a people who were as tough and resourceful as the land itself.
A world away from the fast paced lives of today, it made us stop, enjoy the silence, austerity and rugged beauty. The flora enroute and the bird life is a on another level!
Star treks brought us closer to one of the most remote and remarkable places we have come to love.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a wonderful review! The Whangaparapara Trek is certainly a unique offering, and we are thrilled that you drew so much from the experience. Benny has been excited to guide people through this interesting corner of the island, so peaceful and slow paced, yet there are many tales to be told of busier times for this charming bay. Hope to see you on island again soon :)
