Well worth the effort for the stunning views
Jan 2021
Well worth the effort to see the amazing views. The tracks are very well done and built in steps make up a lot of the steeper parts. Some of these are narrow and a bit trickier to navigate coming down, may not be ideal for those with koi bad knees. Lots of opportunity for stunning photos.
Recommend taking water and a backpack (potentially some snacks as well). Also going earlier or later in the day when it’s cooler as a large portion of the track is exposed with lower growing scrub so little to no shade.

Beautiful Windy Canyon
Dec 2020
Unfit but determined, I managed to make my way up. I did huff and puff but I had the walk to myself and the views on the way up and at the top were well worth the effort. It really is a must do while on the island.

Visiting Windy Canyon
Oct 2020 • Couples
Windy Canyon is a short walk from the road, though there are a number of steep steps in places. But it is totally worth the journey, to see rock formations and astonishing views.
We didn't go on to Mt Hobson - that is a much longer hike and requires significant fitness levels.

Worth the short but steep climb
Sep 2020
Quite steep to get to but worth the views. At the time we went we were the only people there which I think made it even more perfect.

Windy Canyon Stroll
Feb 2020 • Couples
Our group wanted some views without going right up My Hobson, so we just walked up Windy Canyon. A very unique walk, with great Flora, slot of steps and we'll kept walkways and plenty of cicada noise! No clear "lookout" spot but great views in all directions. Well worth the short dive to the carpark and good scenery on the way.

Nice hike
Jan 2020 • Solo
Starting on Aotea Road and ending in Port Fitzroy this is a cool hike. Take in all the volcanic formations, old Kauri dams and great native bush on a very well maintained track. Took me around 4 hours

Spectacular
Dec 2019
This is a challenging, varied walk, not for the unfit or faint-hearted.
But if you are able to do it, the views at the top are outstanding

A great day walk
Oct 2019
We left our car at the 'crossroads' at 0830 and hitched a ride to the start of the Windy Canyon walk. We only walked for about 5 minutes before being picked up by a local nurse on her way to Port Fitzroy. It was a lovely Friday and we had the walk almost to ourselves. Spectacular views everywhere, it's a walk anyone with moderate fitness can do as long as you don't mind walking up lots of steps! We ate our lunch at Mount Heale Hut, then leisurely wandered our way out to Kaitoke Hot Springs to finish around 3pm with a soak. Again, we were the only ones around - the benefit of visiting before the tourist season. Once back onto the Whangaparapara Road, we started walking with our thumbs at the ready, towards our vehicle at the crossroads . NO-ONE came along, so we ended up walking the last bit as well - an extra 30 minutes. I guess we got back to the car about 4pm after a lovely day out.

Fantastic hike but hard work
May 2019 • Couples
This review relates to a 58 and 64 year old with above average fitness and used to walking in mountains .
The hike is only 7.5km return but it took us 3 5hrs to complete .The path is extremely well maintained for 70pct And they are still working on new sections as we walked it .Apart from one scary slippery rocky section where we needed hands and feet to crawl up it is not a technical difficult walk.Endless number of stairs to climb through out the walk.So as an older couple we made .Sturdy hiking boots are recommended. The view at the top makes it all worthwhile

Stunning Views
Jan 2019 • Couples
We almost missed the start of this little adventure, as its so close to the road.

A fantastic walk along this track, well worth the effort of the non stop steps as it feels.
