- Jan ZMelbourne, Australia1 contributionQuick StayWould recommend doing this experience in Rotorua. The guided tour was very informative and our guide(even only being of the age of 17) he had a lot of knowledge about the Geothermal Reserve and his family history. The mud spa and spring were fun :D. The only thing to say is be prepared for the Sulphur SMELL not lovely ha ha.Kia Ora Jan Z, Thank you for sharing your positive feedback with us, we are so pleased you had a great time at Hell's Gate! The guided tour is perfect for finding out more about the bubbling mud and erupting waters before bathing in them and receiving the many benefits, including being a lot of fun! - Frances K12 contributionsWell worth a visit! We weren’t able to get to the park for a guided tour but the map we were provided for the self-walk tour had interesting information about each of the many stops along the way. Unfortunately the mud foot pool was closed due to a change in geothermal activity so we couldn’t try that but the Maori carving at the end was fun. The staff were great, very friendly and informative. Highly recommend a visit.Kia Ora 218francesk, Thank you for sharing your positive feedback and recommendation with us, we are so pleased you had a great time at Hell's Gate! - kathleen_rose981 contributionhighly recommend!Hells Gate was recommended to us by a friend and we would happily pass that recommendation on to anyone visiting Rotorua! We visited on 25/10/23 and booked for 11am but were able to join the 10.30 tour. Unfortunately we didn’t get our tour guide’s name but she was incredible - had so much interesting information and kept us all engaged despite doing the walk in pouring rain! Definitely don’t let bad weather put you off visiting - the geothermal activity was especially cool to watch in the rain. I’d also recommend doing the guided tour if you can. We also did the mud bath and sulfur baths which were excellent and very relaxing after the walk. Just make sure to listen to the workers and take off your jewellery (I forgot about my nose ring and it did tarnish hahaha!)Kia Ora kathleen_rose98, Thank you for sharing your positive feedback and recommendation with us, we are so pleased you had a great time at Hell's Gate! The geothermal reserve gets even more otherworldly in the rain, as the cool water creates an increase in steam and activity. Follow this with a soothing mud bath and spa to warm up again and you have the perfect rainy day activity! We would love to have you back again someday soon. - Alison T3 contributionsWow What an incredible experienceDefinitely recommend this experience. It was like being on another planet. Beautiful green Trees and grass on one side and then boiling bubbling hot pools of rocks and mud on the other side. Absolutely incredible! Loved the carving with the host at the end of the walk! Loved the mud bath at the end followed by relaxing hot pools. Cannot wait to go back and do this again!Kia Ora Alison T, Thank you for sharing your positive feedback with us, we are so pleased you had an incredible experience at Hell's Gate! - FarAwayFromHomeMaidenhead, United Kingdom262 contributionsDelightful & informative tooWe did the tour followed by the mud/spa experience. Absolutely loved it! Tour is really interesting, understanding how one pool contains water while another just a couple of feet away has sulphuric acid in it. After the tour we moved on to the soar, utilising their towels & bathing suits. Changing facilities were simple but clean & the “20 minute rule” really well managed when it came to the mud bath. After the mud bath the showers were close by so you could clean up before entering the spa pools. Friendly and welcoming guy at the counter. Awesome guide, Liam, who guide us theough the walk, telling us the story of different hot “pool” and explaining about Maori history. The mud bath was wonderful. The skin feel amazing for few days after but the smell may also linger a couple of days. We booked the secluded experience at hells gate which includes mud spa and sulphur pools for more than 100NZD pp. The whole „spa“ looked very run down and it feels like the owners do not care about the facilities or invested anything into it in the last years. You get about 20 minutes in a tiny mud pool, which is basically some dirty water with some mud in a corner of it. It is surrounded by high black walls to all sides and does not look and feel welcoming and relaxing as a spa should. The sulphur pools look better and the water is warm. However, staff should really warn you that it is very very hard to get the smell out of your clothes again. We washed our bathing shorts for 3 times and you can still smell it. In addition all shirts or clothes you wearing the following 24 hours adapt the smell of bad eggs as well. Really hard to get rid of. For this very high price one could also expect a welcome drink or maybe some small snacks, but people don’t seem to care about You once you have entered and paid. Place would be fun for about 1/5 of the price and better service.

Our tour guide was really funny and had some great jokes up his sleeve which made the tour even more enjoyable. Josh really knew all about his surroundings and gave us some insights into the history of how these natural pools formed over years. After the guided walking tour, my boyfriend and I had booked the "Tikitere Experience" which we thoroughly enjoyed. The mud bad and following sulphur bath were very relaxing and a new experience to share - highly recommend!

My wife and I were in Rotorua and booked the Tikitere Experience. A note on this one, everything is included! no need to bring a towel or anything.
The staff was great! They took total care of us. We did the walk of the geothermal features first, then changed for the private mud bath and sulfur soak. Wow. So relaxing. The mud bath was really neat, private room with a pool and mud pot to rub all over each other, they give you 20 min in the room but we were done sooner.
As we soaked in the sulfur pools they continually offered us water and were very attentive to our needs., be careful not to touch your eyes though, it will irritate them post haste! I didn't pay attention and boy did I pay for it....
The 2 carvers at the Māori carving hut were awesome! Chatted with us about the local culture and forests, took extra time to help the wife to finish up her carving. Great time, don't miss it!
The mud... Felt great, but dang it was a bit of a chore to get out of the clothes and our fingernails. Took me about a week before my nails looked clean again. Rinsed my clothes about 10 times before washing in the machine and the lint trap was still mud colored. Just a note, you might want to use the provided suits for the mud.

After a 28 hour flight from Toronto we were looking for a luxurious spa day. We went for the full package that included everything except a secluded mud bath, which turned out to be a really complete experience. First we went for a short walk around the most spectacular geographic features, which is a truly remarkable alien landscape. Unfortunately right then it started to absolutely pour so we did not do the extended walk. Instead we went to bathe in the sulphurous hot pools until it was our time in the mud baths. We got 20 minutes in a mud pool by ourselves and had a lot of fun slathering ourselves in the mud. Then we rinsed off and went back to the hot pools for some more relaxation before checking out the Maori carving station, where the carving instructor (I think his name was John?) was extremely friendly and fun. Overall a really lovely experience, highly recommended if you just want a day to relax and hang out. Even after three washes some of our clothes still smell like sulphur but it's not necessarily unpleasant.

A must do when in Rotorua!
I first visited in 2008 and they have massively improved the site. The whole experience was much better as they had more information about the areas, including temperatures and ph levels which we found very interesting comparing the pools as we walked around. We decided to self guide the geothermal area instead of waiting half an hour for the guided tour and the information provided was plenty to still appreciate what you’re seeing.
The carving was fun and a nice souvenir to take away.
The mud baths are much improved and such a nice space now to have fun in the mud! The access to the mud bath is timed to 20 minutes - the staff were organised and efficient. We then enjoyed the different pools around and used their spacious and clean showers/changing rooms to clean up.
We rented their swimwear and towels which is worthwhile for $5 each as this saves the smell going home with you on your clothing - it’s enough to get it out your skin!
The was my husbands first visit and he says it’s one of the highlights as it really isn’t something you can find just anywhere and that’s exactly why I had to come back after all these years as it was something that had stuck with me and I remembered being such a fun memory…now I have this visit to add to that memory.

Great staff, lovely surroundings and a unique experience, but a little pricey. Cost us $200 for the family, and unfortunately our 4 year old felt sick due to the smell and the heat, so we didn't get to stay long. Bad luck for us! An adult costs $79 for the mud pool and sulphur spa or $25 for just the sulphur spa. An extra $54 for the mud pools seems a little OTT. The staff were super nice and helpful. Top marks for them!

This exceeded my expectations. Firstly, you could pay for what you wanted, which in my case was a look around the thermal area without food, cultural events or bathing included.
Secondly, the area was extensive and varied. There were interpretation boards around to explain the features, though a guided tour was available if that was your preference.
The area was large enough for us to wander around essentially on our own. I guess it does get busier at some times, but it was great while we were there. We took around an hour to stroll around and dip our feet in the water at the end, and I guess overall we had value for money.

Amazing to see all these geothermal pools for the very first time. Some visitors just walked around quickly without reading the very informative notices. We didn't. It was good to learn about the history as well.
We were a little disappointed that the mud foot pool wasn't open, but it did say in the literature that
certain elements may not be open. Learned after our visit that some other thermal parks have geysers that blow up to 3 metres high virtually every hour. This one didn't during our 3hr visit. It may be though that the other parks are not as good as this one. Who knows? May be a good idea to check before booking and visiting.
The dining area in the cafe was
quite busy, but there were a few inconsiderate people who just sat there on their phones without having anything to eat or drink.
Souvenirs in the shop were generally reasonably priced and all the staff were very pleasant.

Thank you for taking the time to share your positive experience with us. We are so happy to hear you had a muddy and marvellous time at Hell's Gate. We do apologise for the mud foot pool being closed, however due to the acidic and sulphuric nature of our geothermal park we often see fluctuations in our natural pools. Sometime this can cause our mud foot pool's pH level to become too low to safely use. This is also why we do not have any geysers in our park. Erosion happens too quickly with the acidity of our waters that a plug (to build up pressure beneath the surface, to then be released as a geyser) can't be formed. We hope to see you back here again when you're next in Rotorua.

We had our doubts about young Luke at first. Walking out he had a child like face and looking at each other we were not sure. But boy were we wrong. His pronunciation of Maori words and place names was spot on, his information was incredible and his jokes were hilarious. We enjoyed the tour by Luke so so much and loved his attitude and facts. We then did some Maori carvings with a legend of a man, and then for the spa and sulphur pools, where yet again the staff were friendly and happy to help. The spa was amazing and felt so relaxed afterwards. Thank you so much Hells Gate for an awesome experience.

A 20min car ride from the centre of Rotorua saw us arrive at Hells Gate. We arrived at 3pm on a Friday afternoon and it wasn’t that busy. We booked the Hells Gate experience and did the Geothermal Walk, mud pool and sulphur spa. We did the self guided walk (although they do guided walks at 1030am and 230pm I think). For the self guided walk they give you a map and it’s easy to follow and has information on each part of the reserve as you walk around. This was one of the things I was looking forward to the most on this trip and the geothermal reserve did not disappoint. It smells like someone farted and then tried to disguise it by lighting a match. But you do get used to it.
Then we did the mud spa, you are only allowed in for 20mins for health and safety reasons. They do offer storage for your belongings but not in the form of lockers. They have medium sized black storage boxes to keep your stuff in and then you give this to a member of staff who then gives you a numbered bracelet corresponding to that box for when you return to collect your things. This was a great experience too but I was slightly disappointed as I just thought the mud pools would be quite big and closer to the geothermal parts for a better view. Next was the sulphur spa. Really nice with a great view.
It was a horrible rainy day when we went but this made the experience even better I think. The changing rooms weren’t fantastic (male). When you walk in there was a big square bench to put your things on, a big shower area and a couple of toilets off to the side. If anyone is bothered about stripping off in front of others there was a few private changing room/showers just opposite the sulphur spas.
Overall this is a great place and I would definitely visit again when in around Rotorua.
*** Don’t take your best bathing shorts/bikini or towel. The mud pools will stain them and the sulphur spa will have them smelling of eggs. Also take off any jewellery to prevent it being tarnished. You can hire towels from the place at $5 I think it was.

Kia Ora andyodp1,
Thank you for sharing your feedback with us, we are so pleased you had a great time at Hell's Gate! The geothermal walk is perfect for viewing bubbling mud and erupting water in its natural environment before bathing in it and receiving its many benefits. Your feedback is appreciated and helps us to identify the areas we can improve our visitor experience. We hope to see you again soon!

Hi,
Is this suitable for a 1.5year old at all?
Thanks so much

I wouldn’t advise it. There’s quite a lot of sulphur in the air, and danger from the very hot pools up to 100 degrees

Hi, do we need to book on a Saturday 9 th for 6 adults please.

Not sure but we had the private mud and pool experience. There is limited space there so it may a good idea.

Yes, you need to bring towels. Otherwise you can hire towels for $2 from memory.

Hi, what would you like to know about this attraction?
I'm hoping to be there around the 11th or 12th of June - is it necessary to book early, or can you just arrive and book what you want?

To walk around the park you don't need to book. The guided tour is good but you need to book. If you want a mud bath/sulphur pool I recommend you book as well. June is NZ's Winter season so it could be quiet in the mud/pools/ booking department. So you could be lucky winging it. The reserve is on private land and so I find it less busy and not as overwhelming like the other geothermal company/tours. Hope you have a good time. P.s You'll get use to the smell... I hope. 😂

Do you have to book in advance or can you just go same day?

You need to book in advance for the massage and private message and bath.

Hi TA mates,
I'm looking to book a geothermal walk, mud bath and sulphur spa combo at Hell's Gate. I understand you can do the walk self-guided or with a guide (runs twice a day?). Can anyone advise which option might be best? And does the guided walk cost more/available in the combo package? I'm thinking the guided option might be very crowded and impersonal in November so may be best to take the self-guided option to avoid large crowds? The visit would be in November. Any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated. Also we will be driving down from Pokeno (south of Auckland) that day so thinking it best to detour around Lake Rotorua to Hell's Gate before entering Rotorua for the night (with a motorhome). Would that be the most practical (assuming road north around Lake Rotorua is suitable for motorhomes?). Please forgive me if these are stupid questions - I've not visited Rotorua before:)

Hi, we were there in November of 2015 and it wasn't crowded. The guided tour had approximately 10 people on it. The mud pool had 2 others who got out a few minutes after we got in and the sulfur pool had one other family in it. Leave your silver jewelry off and wear your old swimsuit, my suit still smells after several washings. Not sure about the road to the north, but we drove around all week and all the roads would easily fit a motor home. You can probably check the website for pricing, I don't remember what the guided tour costs. Have fun and make sure you go on the Luge in Rotorua, it was my family's favorite.
