Having never heard of the Palmonova fortress, I was intrigued by our guide's description of the history and significance of this fortress/city in the local history of the region. Having no previous knowledge of the area, I was captivated by the description of the fort...More

An amazingly preserved Venetian Fortress - stunning fortifications and a lovely town inside with lots of great restaurants. Well worth the journey up from Venice. We visited for the annual re-enactment event, which was fanastic to be a part of. Will definitely be returning. Missed...More

This very unique and historic city was built in the shape of a star for military reasons. It is designed to be a fortress and able to withstand attack and seige. However, despite the simple design, the complicated series of one way streets, lack of...More

Except for the fortifications around this city (they are impressive) there's not much to see; every building within the bastions is post WWII ugly. A waste of time unless you're interested in 1600 fortress building.

Thomas More described his ideal city in 1516 and the Venetian made it real in the same century, building a concentric star-shaped walled city, with three nine-sided ring roads intersecting in the main military radiating streets. Its design was based on equality, harmony and beauty...More

On the way back from Friuli to Bologna, I am glad we had a spare hour to make a short detour to Palmanova, which I had always heard mentioned, but never had a chance to visit. Although the architecture of most buildings within the town...More
