Maps depict the source of the Irk as arising in Royton. As these small tributaries join the Irk, it gains momentum before flowing into the Irwell the big river of Manchester via a culvert outside the centre of Manchester.

This confuses me as small river joins in Royton from discharge from sewage works and main drain from under Broadway, but it doesn't become an attraction till Chadderton Park, unless I have missed something. If anyone knows better I will have a walk myself.

The name Irk means swift. This river gathers water from the basin from Royton to the Centre of Manchester. Length of walk is approximately 22 kilometres, toilets are in Royton Centre, Middleton Bus Station, a large supermarkets near the M60 and finally Manchester Victoria, So...More
