This is a rave review of the Falls River trip. Our party consisted of 3 x 50+ year olds and 3 teenage kids from two local families. Typical NZ outdoorsy but nothing extreme, and varying levels of fitness. We had no canyoning experience. Most of us had abseiling experience at the "did once on school camp" or "did once 20 years ago" level. Our guides Toine and Oscar were outstanding - knowledgable, incredible attention to detail & safety, kind and friendly. We took our own boats (and the guides) into Torrent Bay which meant there was no time constraints. The walk in is absolutely fine for anyone who is used to NZ tramping in rough country. The canyoning is fairly full on with quite large waterfalls and features, and relatively long abseils, a zip line and jumps, slides etc through quite powerful water. The professionalism, level of safety and care was excellent. I felt totally safe even with some fairly extreme (to me) situations. A couple of times I lost some courage but Toine was incredibly tolerant and reassuring. Both guides were wonderful with managing the combination of the younger, high adrenalin 3 with the older adults. Toine's logistics and organisation was excellent- the food was plentiful and high standard, lots of communication, individual gear bags labelled with our names etc etc. I totally recommend the trip for anyone happy around water (you will get shoved around by the flow - it's not a swimming pool!), prepared for rough terrain, can cope with heights & exposure, and with a positive attitude. We are the classic kiwis who don't spend money on "tourist" activities but this was worth every penny. As a bonus it showed us a stunningly beautiful part of the park we hadn't know existed, and we saw 3 whio (blue ducks)!

Wow! You're making us blush... This trip was an incredible experience for us too. We absolutely LOVE going to Falls River, going with your amazing two families made it even better. Such a great bunch of friendly, fun-loving people. The banter started first thing in the morning and never stopped. We had a blast from start to finish. Good on you for taking on all the challenges on offer. Thank you!!!

First time canyoning. We both found it a challenging and fun experience. While all the jumps were optional, we made choices that pushed our limits and meant we had an excellent time. Our guide, Jeremiah, was not only skilled in everything needed to get us through the canyon safely, but also shared his knowledge of local history and flora. Would recommend for both New Zealanders and international visitors.

I cannot over emphasise how good this is!!! Firstly it’s much more than just the canyoning…there’s a gorgeous water taxi ride up the stunning Abel Tasman coast, then a lush hike through the bush to the top of the canyon (and the same on the way home).
The canyoning itself was exhilarating! As much adrenaline as I’ve felt since skydiving. There’s a wide variety of canyoning to try…sliding, abseiling, zip lining and good old jumping into a pool. And when the adrenaline kicks in you won’t notice the water temperature! : )
For me, the guides really made this trip. Danelle is a passionate kiwi, clearly very proud of her beautiful homeland and knowledgeable about the environmental issues that threaten it. Pepijn was our other guide, he has a great sense of humour and exudes calm and experience of canyon.
I felt really safe with them and that was massive as I did feel initially nervous. Their patience allowed my confidence to grow and do some of the more extreme jumps and falls.
Oh AND they feed you, AND they don’t charge extra for photographs and videos! Highly recommended

My wife and I had an amazing time with Pepijn and Zeke from Abel Tasman Canyons. The whole day was incredible and we feel very lucky to have experienced Waterfall Creek. It is a long day out but time flew by. This is a fantastic adventure for those who like to get out in nature and push themselves to try new things. Pepijn and Zeke were great fun and at the same time very professional. They explained everything in a clear and concise manner to make sure everyone was safe. The day started with a 2 hour hike up to the top of the canyon in stunning NZ bush. It is a very physical day and Pepijn was making sure we were fueled up with drinks, snacks, and lunch before we descended into the canyon. The canyon itself is remarkable, adding in slides, abseiling, and jumps makes it a very special day. We really enjoyed learning from our experienced guides who were always happy to answer questions and were very encouraging. This was our 3rd time to New Zealand and this was the best activity we have done by far. The office team were also wonderful. They booked us in early and were communicative the entire time. They even helped us with a few recommendations of things to do while in the local area. I could not recommend this highly enough. It is one of the most unforgettable experiences of our lifetime.

Best experience EVER in the Abel Tasman! This was my third time with Toine and his crew and they have delivered a fantastic day from start to finish, with lots of encouragement, lots of fun and lots of food! This time we've chosen the Waterfall Canyon which was on another level. I would recommend this to anyone who would like a unique adventure, tough but also very rewarding, and would love to see a part of the Abel Tasman that only very few people get to see. I'll definitely come back for another round, worth every dollar! Thanks Toine and Zeb for the awesome day! To next time!

Amazing! We jumped off ledges, slid down rock water slides forward, backwards, spinning and zip lined down into the water. Very safe and so much fun and variety ! Better than the one we did in Costa Rica. Fantastic way to experience these beautiful canyons. Guide Ben was excellent!

Incredible experience with Will and Liv! I adventured around the South Island for 5 weeks and this was one of my top highlights. We had a thorough safety briefing, scenic water taxi ride to the dropoff spot, manageable hike that worked up a sweat, ate our provided lunch, then swam and abseiled and zip lined and slid down the river canyon. Best if you feel comfortable in water and on rocks, but the guides are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable so beginners would be fine; they talk you through every single step of the journey. I booked this at the last minute the night before after having this experience recommended by my hostel hosts -- SO glad I signed up and would recommend to anyone in the Abel Tasman area :)

It was my first time canyoning and I had a great time venturing down the Torrent River! The trek up to the start of the canyon was stunning, great views especially in good weather.
Danelle and Ewan our guides were super supportive and helpful - I felt very safe being with them.
There were definitely some out of comfort zone moments as the canyon had a lot of water flowing through it due to rainfall the day before but I was always made to feel safe and there were some alternative options if you didn’t want to jump off the high waterfalls. Probably not something to do if you have a phobia of fast flowing water as there are some very strong currents along the canyon.

What time do you normally get back to Marahau on your “Torrent River” day trip?
Written 4 November 2018
Hi there, sorry for the late response to your question. We usually arrive back to Marahau at around 5pm, although this time can change if we run a second trip.
Thank you.
The Abel Tasman Canyons Team.

I was so set to book the guts and glory package for myself and my husband when I saw it won't begin until Oct. 1 any canyoning in South island in September? Our month long adventure in NZ ends on Sept. 25....fingers crossed this was high on our list

How high are the jumps? (feeling a little nrevous)
Written 21 October 2016
Hi Michele, thank you for your question. The highest jump in our most popular canyon Torrent River is 8m. A good thing to know is that the jumps or slides are always optional. If it looks a little bit too high or too scary you can always jump from a lower point or the guides can let you abseil down instead. They are great at helping you find your limits. You'll love it!

How much does a tour cost? Do they fully book? I'm in Westport tonight and will be in this area within the next few days and don't want to miss out!
Written 24 February 2015
Hi, thank you for your question. For our different products and prices please go to our website. Our most popular trip is Torrent River for $269.
We sometimes book out so I would recommend booking in early. Either call us using our contact details listed on our website or use our online booking system. The office staff is happy to help you with your booking and to answer any questions.
We're looking forward to taking you on an adventure!
