Wildlife in abundance and a lovely little restaurant too. A really massive play area that boys of all ages (and girls) will love and plenty of space for picnics. Some nice things in the shop too. One we shall never forget. We joined the trusts first ever guided boat trip from the landing stage at Carlton Marshes to their new site at Worlingham Marshes. We went aboard a twelve man inflatable. A first for 2 ladies of a certain age. Everything from help donning our life jackets to assistance boarding was given by the vessels skipper. Then the volunteer warden chatted about what we might see, gave us background and identified the warblers and buntings as we went along. Vickie added extra background and was inspirational with her enthusiasm for this initiative. Of course having so many pairs of Red Kites swooping and soaring overhead against a beautiful blue sky really made our day. We briefly walked into the new area and heard about the restoration of some badly neglected areas and conservation of others. Then it was time to return. Again we saw the birds, dragonflies, damselflies and butterflies for which the marshes are renown. But this guided boat trip to a new marsh well and truly made our day. Many thanks to Vicky, Barry and our host on his boat. Do sign up if you get the chance. Some trips are daytime and others early evening. - BNA20152015Bath, United Kingdom435 contributionsDog friendly nature reseveWe saw the sign on the road and, after checking, found that dogs were allowed on leads. A nice big car park ( suggested donation £3 ). Lovely reception centre and cafe. We were given a map of the reserve and they told us about the available routes. These turned out to be well surfaced and well signposted. There are several bird hides where you can stop for a reast too ! Free to enter the reserve so if you love nature it is well worth a visit.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 August 2024
- John ELowestoft, United Kingdom14 contributionsAll of the wheelchair users in our group found the surface to be firm and smooth.Carlton Marshes has a good sized car-park, but only two Blue Badge spaces. There is a nice visitor’s centre with a cafe serving hot food and an area selling cute gifts and souvenirs. The children’s play area looks quite big with logs, etc to climb on. Several pathways lead around the nature reserve, which are colour code and signposted. We followed the ‘Orange’ route. All of the wheelchair users in our group found the surface to be firm and smooth. Accessible toilets … good and bad … the disabled toilet is excellent with – the toilet, an adult changing table, a hoist, a small shower and lots of space. However, there seems to be only one disabled toilet (please post an answer if I have missed it). So if these lovely facilities were being used it would mean that other wheelchair users could not go to the toilet at all.Visited August 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 6 August 2024
- HumphmanKessingland, United Kingdom602 contributionsGreat to be backWe are so lucky to have this place virtually on our doorstep. This was out first visit in a while as we used to take our old dog Charlie there but sadly no longer with us. We now have a new dog called Freddie and he loved his first visit (and not his last). There are a few different walks you can take, we chose the shorter black one this time as wasn't sure how Freddie would get on but gladly we needn't have worried. Nice little visitor centre where you can sit inside or out and have a snack and a drink.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 September 2024

This relatively new reserve gives great access to birdlife on the marshes and river and links to the foot ferry and the riverside rights of way. The hides are well designed with glass fronts with seats on both sides which you can choose depending on the weather conditions.
There is a good café, but with a bizarre payment system where after ordering you are asked to just stand to one side with everyone else waiting , while a different member of staff brings your order. Good choice of cakes including gluten free, though the GF cakes are not properly separated on the shelf, that needs to be addressed to avoid cross-contamination. The views from here are lovely wit a great viewing platform area
There is a block of clean loos (all unisex which was confusing many visitors) . A Large children's play area with lots of climbing equipment.
Parking in theory is free but there is a voluntary £3 donation requested.

Many thanks for your review and your constructive feedback. We have improved the queuing system as there have been issues with managing people waiting for takeaway hot drinks as you correctly pointed out. We have also adjusted the cake display so that GF cakes are positioned on a separate display shelf. We will also be auditing our signage and making improvements to help orientate people around the reserve and to our facilities.

Despite the drizzly start we walked around the red walk and after a slow start the birds soon appeared along with a few Water deer. Highlights were Cuckoo, Avocet, Yellow Wagtail, Reed & Sedge Warbler. Cracking reserve will definitely return when next over in Suffolk

This is such a lovely place to walk round and there are several different length trails to take depending on fit you are. The walk we chose took about 90 minutes and you can see loads of wildlife including Deer, Birds, Cows and Horses.
When you get back to the entrance there is a lovely cafeteria serving hot and cold food, slightly expensive in my opinion but the walks are free so not really a complaint.
It's amazing to find such a remote and beautiful place right on my doorstep so roll on our next walk round.
Also a shout out to people working there who are friendly, helpful and very passionate about what they do, thank you everyone.

Thank you for your lovely review and I will pass along your kind message to the staff and volunteers!
Next month we will be reopening trails that shorten the main loop and allow access into some different habitats, as well as seeing how the bees and dragonflies like their new purpose-built banks and pools.
We hope you're able to visit us again soon!

A beautiful nature reserve for all the family. Lovely walks, great play area, Lots of picnic tables, free parking, cafe and toilets. We went to build nest boxes and can’t thank Lyndsey and Brian enough. What a credit to the reserve engaging with the children and helping them with their wood working skills. Letting the little ones play with wood, hammers and nails they loved it. We will definitely be going back.

Fantastic! Really please you had such a good day and got to take a nestbox home with you, do let the Team Wilder folks know when you get birds nesting as they will love to know their progress, you can find out more on the Suffolk Wildlife Trust website.
This Easter we have activities on pretty much everyday, including dyke dipping and wild clubs, so do check before visiting.
Thanks

We visited on 4th June and the weather forecast was for rain, so we knew it would be a wet walk.
We ended up doing nearly 6 miles instead of the intended 2 1/2 mile red walk. Once we realised we’d gone wrong, we retraced our steps but couldn’t find the turn off point as circled in my photo.
Lovely place. Unspoilt. No crowds (except in play area), but could do with better route markings.

Being from West Suffolk we generally go to Lackford Lakes so made an expedition to the far east. Big free car park and lovely visitor center with a very good range of cakes in the cafe. We had a warm welcome from the volunteers outside who, on hearing we were from out of town, gave us the full rundown of hints and tips for things to see on the reserve. We had a great trip

As a group of friends we spent an hour or so following one of the (signposted) routes through the marshes (red route).
Very quiet and relaxing with friendly hellos as you pass other walkers with their families or dogs.
Nice little cafe and decent toilet facilities. Outdoor / wooden play area for children
Free car parking - but voluntary donations invited.

Carlton Marshes has a good sized car-park, but only two Blue Badge spaces.
So if these lovely facilities were being used it would mean that other wheelchair users could not go to the toilet at all.

Visited as we wanted to walk to Oulton Broad but it looked so nice we spent some time here too. Large, free car park, lots of walks signposted around the site (or downloadable from their website). Most of the paths are laid to gravel or impacted earth so easy to walk around. Not many animals to spot due to works going on but we did see some hawks, storks, swans and even a deer in the undergrowth.
The walk from the marshes to Oulton takes about 20 mins, a good option if you don't want to pay to park there and very easy to do.
The new visitor centre is underway and looks amazing, will definitely be going back when it's open. Well done for getting on with it with how things are.
Only minor issue was the existing visitor centre was shut, understandably, so toilets weren't available, but there are some in Nicholas Everett park in Oulton.
