We were lucky to have found EcoGuideCafe last year for our trip to Okinawa. This was our first trip to Miyakojima and we were really spoiled with the whole gang of amazing staff. Max, the English speaking manager was super helpful from the time he picked us up at our hotel, setting us up for the snorkeling tour, and our return back. The unique aspect of this guide service is they promote coral reef preservation and environmental conservation. The staff thoroughly described the know-how and benefits of ECO snorkeling/diving to the point of even picking up garbage at one of the beaches we visited! Respect! We need more and more environmental conscious people like this team so that we and future generations may enjoy nature's beauty! Highly recommended! Looking forward to going back again soon! Thanks again !

The Gist: You will wonder why it took you so long to come here.
I've been snorkeling in a few places, the Gold Coast in Australia and Key West, Florida were a notable few. The scenery and array of sea life I saw on this "slow-dive" blew them both away.
Mind-blowing nature aside, the real star of the show is the "slow-diving" mask. Basically you'll live out your deepest Darth-Vader fantasy with this effortless diving mask. It fits completely over your face so you don't need any diving experience to dive. According to the owner the slow diving experience is fun for everyone 8-80 years old, so it's totally family friendly.
Eco Guide Service:
The staff here are very nice and do there best to make you feel comfortable. I was staying at the Hotel Breeze Marina Bay and they picked me up and dropped me back off at the hotel which is a nice no-stress way to start and close out the day.
Most of the staff is from Tokyo and Osaka and have a Basic understanding of English and 1 of the tour guides on Irabu lived overseas for a bit and speaks English well. The guide will also take pictures of you throughout the day - both above and below the water- and they'll offer you a CD with all of your photos for around 500 Yen which is very fair for what you're going to get.
They do a whole lot of different things here, but this is what I did:
08:40 Pick up from Hotel Breeze Bay Marina
09:00 Registration Eco Guide Cafe
09:30 Ferry to Irabujima island (15 mins)
09:45 Irabujima Sightseeing
10:15 Kayafa BeachSnorkeling - /Sea Kayak/Slow diving/lunch
14:15 Sightseeing around Shimojijima
15:50 Transfer to the ferry terminal and await the ferry back to Miyakojima
16:00 Ferry back to Miyakojima
16:20 Enjoy some refreshments and view a slide show of the photos taken on the tour
16:30 Transfer back to the hotel
If you've read this far, stop reading and book your flight now! (Peach or Jetstar are crazy cheap) to Naha and then onyward on to Miyakojima. This is an experience you'll never forget!

This tour was unlike any other.
From the moment I stepped off the plane upon arrival to Miyakojima, the weather was beautiful and I knew that I would be in for a real treat. We stayed at the Hotel Breeze Bay Marina which provided us with a spectacular view of the beach from our room, great breakfast, and an amazing pool. The hotel offers a countless range of activities such as star gazing tours and segue riding.
The Eco Guide Cafe Tour was incredibly well organised. The tour guides were very friendly, telling us fascinating little facts about the islands. We took a ferry from Miyakojima to Irabujima island where the beaches were absolutely amazing. I was astounded by the crystal blue colour of the water. It was truly like a little hidden paradise. The tour guides were very informative and taught us all about the different types of nemo clownfish. We even got to see a very rare kind of nemo fish! Nothing felt rushed, as the tour guides let us take our own pace with the snorkelling and gave us lots of free time.
This tour allows you to experience slow diving, which can be done nowhere else in the world except Miyakojima. It was a truly magical experience being able to be at one with nature and the beautiful creatures of the sea. It really proved to me just how wonderful nature is and the importance of conserving the beauty of the world around us.
We even got to canoe around the crystal blue waters and explore the surrounding caves. On top of that, the tour guides took us sightseeing around the island to a bridge with amazing views. We bought amazing shells and necklaces from the locals and the tour guides took photos for us throughout the trip.
All in all, it is an amazing experience and Miyakojima should be put at the top of your bucket lists!

The guides at Eco Guide Café have been focused on improving local dive spots around Miyako Island for several years now. Each spring, they organize the removal of over 30,000 Crown of Thorns starfish, so that the reefs can regenerate.
The staff’s ecological work has really paid off. When we visited in October 2014, we viewed vibrant coral while snorkeling at Kayafa Beach—along with the widest array of tropical fish we have seen in Japan—wrasses, parrot fish, angels, and four different kinds of clown fish. In addition, Eco Guide Café introduced us to White Beach as well, which is one of best maintained beaches we have seen in Japan—long, white, and with a view all the way out to the reef, unobstructed by the common concrete barriers which so frequently undermine the Japanese beach experience.
Eco Guide Café introduced us to our best beach experience so far in Japan. The are dedicated to their work--providing a beach experience rarely available inside Japan.

Last weekend I went down to Miyakojima again to experience my first diving adventure. I could use Eco Guide Cafe which has a fantastic crew that is dedicate to preserving coral (the owner Izawa-san recently received an award for his work from the Japanese government) and also knows where to take you. I loved the colour diversity and the fact that the fish are totally ok with humans so close to them, it was a unique experience slow diving, snorkelling, scuba diving and sea kayaking. Thanks guys and I will definitely be back for more!

I visited Okinawa last November and had my first snorkeling and slow diving experience with the Eco Guide Cafe. The tour around Kayafa beach and beautiful spots in shimoji-jima was impressive.
Guides from Eco Guide Cafe are like no others, they are knowledgeable coaches who will guide you through the entire tour, they are dedicated to preserving and protecting coral reefs and marine life. Through their efforts on educating people how to appreciate the beauty of nature, everyone comes to visit Miyakojima can see the stunning beauty under the sea.
This year I visited Krabi, a popular tourist destination in Thailand, however, I saw litters scattered on pristine beaches, less tropical fish and lots of dead coral reefs under the sea. Even some tourists beat against corals and behaved vulgarly like they consumed everything. This reminds me of the very different tour organized by the Eco Guide Cafe, they are not just guiding a tour, but also raising public awareness to care about our environment and the mother nature.
I would strongly recommend Eco Guide Cafe to enthusiastic nature lovers, they will show you the most beautiful Miyakojima blue and the true color of Okinawa!!

It was my first experiences at snorkle diving, sea kayak,... An unforgettable discovery of life under the sea, a real whole new world! We enjoyed so much the warm sun, sea breeze, marvellous coral reefs and cute fish. Above all, the people of Miyakojima, especially the staff of Eco Guide Cafe-host for our trip, were really kind, enthusiastic and hospitable. No doubt that they are proud and protective of their "natural treasures": the Great coral reefs. So please, enjoy yourselves but be gentle to the beautiful coral reefs which are home to cuttie tropical fish; DO NOT TOUCH anything because we would not like that if we were ocean creatures. After the snorkeling, the staff took us around the island and we visited another beach thats was just beatiful. Overall the trip was great, staff was awesome and just a great experience!!!!

Like many other reviewers here, I have done a fair amount of snorkelling and a little diving around Asia, but nothing comes close to the experience to be had at Kayafa Beach.
Crystal clear water, a zillion varieties of marine life and some truly breathtaking coral. It really is hard to remember that this is part of Japan.
So, a beautiful place to snorkel, agreed. But what makes this such a great day trip is that the staff at Eco Guide Cafe really know what they are doing and provide a great balance between instruction and self-exploration. Emphasis is on safety and ensuring all participants adhere to their Eco Manner code of conduct. Basically just common sense things like not touching the reef or leaving litter. The highlight is the full-face mask 'slow-diving'. You can breath normally through your nose and mouth since your entire face is covered. Perfect for beginners or those a little wary of the water.
But, a word of warning... floating lazily around the reef in the hot sun may be one of the most relaxing things to do ever devised, but it leaves you extremely exposed to the elements. Make sure to cover up all appendages, especially if you burn easily. Note to self.

The team at Eco Guide Cafe really make everything easy. My wife had only been snorkelling before and was hesitant to go under the water but the "slow diving" with a full face mask and being guided around the house reef was so easy. As I have a PADI open water, I was offered the chance to go out further and explore with the guide. The snorkelling, kayaking and lunch were great too.
Thanks for a great experience!

Written 9 August 2015

Written 20 July 2015
