A two faces castle Historical monument, Harcourt is a fortress in a bower of verdure : of the mighty castle founded in the twelth century by the Harcourts and strenghtened over the following centuries, a large part of the curtain wall and th moat remain. Only the western facade of the chateau still has its medieval aspect (high walls rising straight from the moat, towers, buttresses). The eastern facade of the chateau was rebuilt around 1700 by Francoise de Brancas, countess of Harcourt. In accordance with the new architectural style of the day,and in order to make it more inhabitable, the moat was filled in and the walls were pierced by tall windows. The arboretum, two centuries old The arboretum is exceptional for its history ;it is a real botanical collection of more than two hundred species, of which the oldest aure two hundred years old. Its existence is associated with some of the most memorable names in the field of horticulture, such as Delamare, Michaux,Pepin, Vilmorin... who have intervened in its development at various points since its foundation in 1810. The arboretum was classified as a > in 2004. An impressive collection of huge old conifers, especially ceders and douglas firs, but also spruces (Picea), true firs (Abies) and pines. They even have a few white pines (Pinus strobus) which seem to have escaped the blister rust (Cronartium ribicola). Plenty of great broadleaves too,...More

The castle though small has lots of interesting historical information. The grounds are lovely to walk around with the added interest of many different trees. It is a great place to walk the dog and let kids have a run around.

Three seniors, staying near Brionne were delighted to find this superb exemple of a fortified chateau. It is difficult in this short note to say much about it's history, but if you are fortunate enough to visit, then an excellent brochure in English is available...More

The place has two hghlights : first there is the setup of the old castle, that reflects the medieval Norman structure with deep defensive ditches and a pre-castle. Next is the botanical park around the castle with a collection dating as of 18..+

A quiet and lovely chateau set in woodland. If out of season (season is June-Sept) d'Harcourt only opens from 2-6, otherwise it opens at 10.30. Good value (4 Euro adults, 1.50 for kids). The house and surrounding fortifications are picture perfect and you can easily...More
