About
Kapiti Island is one of New Zealand's most visited places for bird watchers. It is an internationally renowned sanctuary and is blessed with an abundance of native and endangered species like Little Spotted Kiwi, Takahe, and the cheeky Kaka who have not survived so well on the mainland. This nature-inspired setting is the perfect place to experience New Zealand's native birds in their natural environment. Kapiti Island is just 40 minutes north of Wellington, New Zealand's capital city. Activities include half and full day nature tours, overnight Kiwi spotting and rare bird tours. The Maori hospitality you will experience on Kapiti Island - one of New Zealand's most precious nature reserves - is unsurpassed.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Had a great weekend, so much bird song and great to see a kiwi on our night tour. Very informative guides, wonderful meals and warm cosy cabins.

We did a self guided day tour, although it started with a really great introduction and briefing from one of the guides. We went mainly for the birdwatching and the island exceeded our expectations, it was as good as Ulva for us! With a bit of patience and a pair of binoculars we saw just about everything. Kaka, kakariki, hi hi, whitehead, saddlebacks, kokako, tui, bellbirds, gannets. Somebody else saw one of the two resident takahe. No kiwi of course as we were there during daylight hours. The walk to the summit is easily done in the time you have (we are 50 something and spend a lot of time looking at birds). The forest is lovely and the boat trip was fun, launching from the back of a tractor into breaking surf was a laugh. If you like birds make sure you walk the estuary too, plenty of dotterells, oyster catchers, shags and terns.

It has been on our bucket list for years to stay on Kapiti Island. Our glamping tent was special and the hospitality second to none. We loved the walks around Rangatira and also Waiorua and it was wonderful to hear again the bird song of tieke, tui, kaka, korimako, piwakawaka, kiwi pukupuku, pukeko, ruru and see takahe, shags and other seabirds. It gives one a taste of what the birdsong in NZ used to be like.

Amazing how Kāpiti ecosystem was restored and is now preserved.
Outstanding service from Kāpiti Nature Tours Team, fron booking, pickup and drop off in Wellington, pleasant drive both ways, breakfast at cafe was simple and delicious, boat ride, guided tour and lunch.

Kāpiti view from Paraparaumu Beach is setting the pace for what the island has to offer. A magnificent display of fauna and flora. Keep your eyes and ears open to catch what nature has to offer.

The fall weather was just perfect, sunny and fresh, even warm at times.

I wish I could have stayed overnight!

Although the boat trips both there and back were rather rough due to strong wind, everything else was excellent. Thanks

Good views, great walking track, friendly guide, enjoyable lunch.
Didn't see as much wildlife as I would have liked to see.

The sound of bird song was what hit us first. It sounded like a recording until we realised that it continued as we walked along the paths. Pi, the guide gave us a very informative talk about the history of the island and then gave us some great recommendations about where to find birds on our walk. The number of birds was amazing. The kaka at the nectar feeding station were very cheeky. The hospitality at the lodge was second to none. Beau was an amazing host with a wealth of information and is so passionate about the island and its history. It was a privilege to speak to Charlie too about his desire to preserve his ancestry for his whanau and he helped us regain our bearings when we thought we had lost the path back to the beach! Ben was such a friendly and amazing chef. The food was so plentiful and impossible to resist. I even managed to prise his soup recipe from him to recreate at home. The accommodation was so warm and comfortable. It was lovely to be able to share this little bit of paradise with the local families even for a short time. This was our second attempt to get to the island and it was so worth the effort to get there. It should be on everybody’s bucket list to visit this remarkable place.

We had a fantastic trip - grandparents and children - so a great adventure for the 5 and 8 year olds.
The boat trip was fun, the bird song was amazing and lots of sightings of rare birds.
5 hours on the island was enough to walk to the summit.
Great example of ecosystem restoration when the pests are removed. Everyone should experience that.
Seemed quite expensive for a family at first but well worth it.
100% recommended.

When I was told about this Island by a New Zealand friend I knew I had to visit. Good to see bird life adjusting and growing on island. As a keen birder was very happy to be able to see fivealso got three of my target birds. (& get photos) of my seven target birds. Two target birds seen but unable to get photos. did the short walk around the lagoon & lookout, as it was windy which proved to be the best choice for bird spotting. The lunch at the house was the best meal I had in the two weeks in New Zealand. This was also where I got three of my target birds. Will put this place on my to do list if I come again to the North Island.
