Iconic! Must do! Our drive to Bluff was timed for a bike ride, not a car trip, so we were very early and treated to the most incredible sun rise enroute.

I visited as part of a tour but as I had visited Cape Reinga last year this was the extension to be able to say I have seen the top and the bottom of the country.
As I was going to Stewart Island, the added bonus was seeing Maui's chain and anchor at Bluff and completing the scene by matching it with the chain and anchor on the island at Lee Bay and understanding the symbolism of the inter-relationships that have been fostered between Rakiura and the mainland.
As is written on the plaque in the footpath "I must go over to New Zealand some day" my statement was "I must go from the mainland to Rakiura one day" AND I HAVE!

The signpost is worth a visit, not just for the sign and the photos you can take, but the view and the small walks nearby.

Some of our group had never been this far south so great to take them to this iconic location and look at over the strait to our next destination - Stewart Island

It is well worth making the effort to get to Stirling Point at the very end of State Highway 1. This is a good spot to see all the huge ships that take Foveaux Strait. And just to be at the most southerly point on State Highway 1 is amazing. But this isn't the most southern point in New Zealand that is Slope Point. I loved the new sculpture of Maui's anchor chain that has been installed near the signpost.

Back again after we did this about 6 months ago. It was raining and we had just finished the shark dive. Take a walk along the coast, but did the most southern part of the South Island at Slope Point, but this is a much better place for pictures.

We happened to be there in the afternoon when the sky was moody grey and white, the water a deep blue and the sun peaking through from the west. Gave us perfect footage. Yes the parking space is small but with people/groups coming in just for photo ops there was a good turn over of car parks.

I have wanted to come for many years and finally made it. It did not disappoint. Loved the signpost. It was a clear sunny day. Well worth coming the extra distance from Invercargill.

Great to know that I've been there and done that. Would be good if there were picnic tables so that people can stop longer. Car park area is quite small and there were lots of vehicles there when we arrived. So it was just a photo stop and then we went down the road and stopped by the memorial for lunch.
There is a restaurant there though.
