- Carlo M33 contributionsHighlight of our visit to ScicliWe visited on a wet Saturday morning and we were immediately warmly welcomed by Don Carmelo. He gave us an extremely enthusiastic and interesting tour of everything in the small cave dwelling. His energy was contagious and joyful. Thank you very much, this the highlight of our visit to Scicli. It was a real shame that the rest of the cave dwelling area of Scicli is currently closed to the public.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 February 2024
- MailaPalermo, Italy55 contributionsMandatory stopA leap into the past through stories of life and traditions. An emotional journey into the history of Mr. Carmelo's family, a simple and genuine man. An obligatory stop if you are in Scicli, especially if you love looking closely at old work tools and vintage objects. Carmelo will surprise you and maybe even make you smile.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 2 March 2024
- Claudia R39 contributionsA privilege to visit it!Don Carmelo is history, visiting the cave was a unique experience, I strongly recommend going to visit it because it represents in all respects the tradition of late nineteenth and early twentieth century rural homes in Sicily, many childhood memories have resurfaced, with one difference: all set in the wonderful Scicli caves. I thank Carmelo for the hospitality and dedication he transmits so that everyone can smell the scent of times gone by. Greetings from Claudia and Daniele from Catania.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 April 2024
- Grazia C3 contributionsUnique experience... absolutely not to be missed!!!Truly enchanting place!!! Thanks to the knowledge, knowledge and experience exposed by Carmelo Raimondo, we immersed ourselves in the roots of our history, rediscovering aspects of our culture that have now been forgotten. It is impossible to describe the quantity of objects inside the cave: you absolutely must visit it!! Thank you Carmelo, guardian of our traditions! - silvio MReggio Emilia, Italy562 contributionsBut how important is memory?Carmelo, and a life story. Folklore? Also. Opportunism? Perhaps. but genuine Surely, and above all memory,..memories,..knowledge to pass on. MEMORY, the one that when missing risks making us retrace the mistakes of times gone by. Carmelo tells much more than he says. Carmelo talks about the importance of passing on knowledge to develop values, Carmelo says that especially to young people, if we want them to develop values, the memories of our past must be passed down. - Maria_BarlettaBarletta, Italy49 contributionsThe pearl of ScicliThe visit is very interesting and Mr. Carmelo provides explanations, anecdotes and curiosities about an infinite number of objects, also created by him. Do not miss playing with the top and beautiful nativity scene. Friends of RomeVisited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 June 2024
- rdy7147 contributionsLive another era!Carmelo Raimondo describes the way of life of what is now another era. In the neighborhood of Chiafura where entire families lived in houses carved into the rock and therefore had to strive to exploit every inch of available space, there is still this cave where his grandparents lived. Carmelo explains how they slept, cooked, washed, In short, 8 people lived in 15 square meters. Unfortunately, like many important sites in Sicily, Chiafura is also left to fend for itself by the institutions, and it is a real shame because it would have nothing to envy to the stones of Matera. Carmelo is also an artist, (the nativity scene a real spectacle) and produces handmade souvenirs with wood and stone. At the end of the visit he gave us a demonstration of how to play with the top and twine centuries ago, involving my children and showing various types of shots. If you pass by Scicli is the first stop of the visit.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 21 July 2024
- Giorgia L2 contributionsDay in Scicli with SurpriseDestination Scicli. After finishing the visit to the Church of San Bartolomeo, we went to the caves of Chiafura, and came across Ron Carmelo Raimondo: with passion, sympathy and simplicity he took us to his "magical cave (then inhabited by his grandfather with all his family, there were 8), he told us and showed us in great detail and anecdotes life there. It was like taking a trip into the past with him: the straw bed, the hearth for baking bread and many other activities that we let you discover. After the visit he took us to another room, always inside the cave where he keeps his various creations, tops, carts, flutes etc .. We want to thank Ron Carmelo Raimondo for this fantastic but real journey inside his cave. Highly recommended! Friends from EmiliaVisited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 August 2024
- Antonella R1 contributionA leap into the pastDon Carmelo takes you by the hand into the past, with sympathy and serenity and with his language rich in dialect expressions. In addition to being a fine craftsman he is also a person of culture and well documented on the history and traditions of Scicli. You can ask him all the questions you want and you will find a Response to your curiosity. Magnificent nativity scene, if you go in winter do not miss a visit. We happened upon this small "museo" while walking in Scicli. The views were very nice on the way up (we followed a series of signs posted along the way). Carmelo was very nice and welcoming (if you don't speak Italian bring someone who does). His family had lived in this tiny grotto with their animals for many, many years and he gives an enthusiastic tour. He is also a bit of a craftsman and will be most happy to sell you some of his wares. The visit was entirely fascinating and is recommended.

The museum is unique and gives an authentic insight into the reality of life of the people in Scicli until a few decades ago. We spontaneously decided to visit due to a heavy rain shower and did not regret it - it was THE attraction of our trip to Sicily. Carmelo is a lovely man who tells the story of his family with great joy and enthusiasm. It is even possible to buy handmade souvenirs from his son or himself - without the sale being advertised. We had actively asked whether a certain item was for sale. Best wishes to Carmelo from "coppia tedesca" (30.09.23)

We met the descendant of Don Carmelo, a lovely and very kind person who made us visit the cave in detail, telling us the story. He also showed us the beautiful nativity scene built by him piece by piece, and a multitude of objects made with his own hands. Beautiful experience

Having passed the cave by chance, curiosity pushed us to enter. We came across the volcanic Mr. Carmelo, who with great detail and great participation showed us the cave and described many objects from the Sicilian past. A pleasant journey to discover our roots and traditions. Greetings from the couple from Catania to Mr. Carmelo.

We happened upon Ron’s museum entirely by chance while strolling around Scicly (May 2023). He was such a great host. Although he didn’t speak English, and my Italian is horrible, he was so good at showing us all the cool things in his little displays that we understood everything. We gladly purchased a top and some soap when we were done. Oddly enough, it’ll be one of the most memorable experiences from our two weeks in Sicily!

If you are in Scicli don't miss a visit to Ron Carmelo!
Unique and truly interesting place.
3 caves. The main cave was the home of his grandparents and is furnished as at the time. In the second there is a very beautiful and very detailed nativity scene, made by Carmelo. They are in the third
many tools from times gone by, some unknown to me, of which Don Carmelo explains the use, and many objects and ornaments made by him. The spinning tops that he teaches you to use are special.

Ron Carmelu, an excellent guide who welcomed us into his cave at the Chiafura archaeological park. We started from the history of the caves through various eras to delve into that of his family: objects that belonged to Carmelo's grandparents allowed us to smell the bread of the time, to see the industrious hands of the grandmothers and to imagine how one could live even 8 in that cave. Our children learned how to play with the troopettu and the water ocarina ☺️ Thank you Ron Carmelu from your friends in Catania for sharing with us the memories of a life marked by the simplicity of the values of the past.

The cave is a good reproduction of how people lived a hundred years ago. The nativity scene is also beautiful. The Don Carmelo we met is a self-confident, arrogant, touchy old man who tries to sell you anything. Given the time it takes to reach the cave, the very short duration of the visit and the cost, frankly it is not worth it.

I don’t think Carmelo speaks French. I think you should find an interpreter!
