The rods, bait and net are free to use but if you catch a fish (which you will) you have to pay for it. Approx $35 per kg, plus approx $12-15 for filleting and hot smoking. Each fish is approx 1kg. Catching the fish was very fun for the children. Be prepared that you must kill the fish yourself once netted and remove the hooks. There were no staff dedicated to helping people with the fishing and killing. This was unfortunate as we saw people struggle to deal with this and as a result some fish suffered. More information about how to net and kill the salmon would be useful. If you are not experienced - I strongly recommend you ask for a lesson prior to fishing. The filleting and smoking service is excellent and will leave you with a high quality product.

What an adventure, beautiful place and very friendly stuff. We caught 3 large fish and smoked 2 of them in different flavours and third one took home. Reasonable prices and lovely sitting area.
We go at least twice a year.

I visited this place for the first time yesterday (30 Dec 2022) and I resolved by the end I was going to leave this review.
The place was busy, no doubts about that and while you do have to wait a little while for your orders at the end there is no doubt that it is worth the wait.
I ate raw salmon for the first time ever and while I have had Salmon before, the unique experience of being able to catch it was fun in itself. All around the fishing pond you heard the screams of excitement and enjoyment as people were catching fish of all sizes. I saw a young child bring in an almost 3kg (6 pound) fish. It was awesome.
If my wife and children weren't overseas we certainly would have caught more and had an awesome time on top of it all.
The rules are strict, and with good reason (ie, you can't catch and release, you take what you catch), but the cost of $33 per KG of the fish is much more in the supermarket, where most times you are half that for 200g of some pre-packaged stuff. (Boneless Atlantic Salmon at Countdown frozen is $35 per KG for 1 fillet.
Just also be mindful, you do pay a little extra for the prepping, smoking, ceviche, but it again, is worth the little extra. I'm not sure if they would let the more skilled person go off and do it on their own but worth asking.

We had checked to see what activities were available near Takaka and this came up. What a great choice we made. An almost unfailable fishing adventure. 6 friends - 6 salmon. They were smoked and boxed with 30 mins while we had a coffee and muffin at their cafe. The platters going past us to customers who were just there for lunch, were very impressive. 6 different coatings on our salmon and we had 3 meals!! Highly recommended.

We first visited here about 10-years ago and we must say that we had a better experience then. That does not mean to say that our recent experience was bad, simply just not as good. Ten years ago, we were pulling in fish every 5-10 minutes (we were a group of 10). Yesterday, after over an hour and not so much as a nibble, we gave up. We also noticed a lot of other people giving up and walking away without fish. We did see some fish caught, but not many.
We ordered some lunch from the cafe (salmon pizza, chips, chicken nuggets & ciabatta $41 for 5 people) and despite the inexplicable wait-time, the food tasted good. The salmon pizza was especially good.

Our favourite salmon farm in the South Island. Awesome place to catch some salmon. Pro tip: ask them for some pieces of fish as bait and you'll get bites 10x faster! Once you catch and pay for your fish they can smoke them, grill them or cut up as sashimi. Unfortunately the sashimi "chef" is probably a high school student on a summer job who basically mangled the fillet so if you're picky, take the fillet home and cut it up yourself!
Some options for those not wanting the hassle of fishing include salmon pizza or a salmon platter. All very reasonably priced for very fresh salmon! Nice and ample seating area.

We thoroughly enjoyed the amazing Salmon platter at Anatoki Salmon for lunch today, along with a glass of Chardonnay. There was so much variety and different tastes along with nice bread and we thought it very good value for money. Everything is very laid back so do not expect full restaurant service, but all the staff were extremely friendly.
Previous to having lunch we watched many folk catching their own salmon and it was great entertainment.
We would thoroughly recommend this as a must do whilst in Golden Bay.

I love going to anatoki to catch my own lunch. All gear is provided to do so. Pay for what you catch. They are also very willing to help you catch something or give tips if you need it
Otherwise cast your rod and see what bites in the plentiful lake. They can then smoke and cook your catch to eat while there or you can take it home, they can also add lovely seasonings etc. Never had a bad meal there yet. The cafe has a nice outlook with a large selection of other things you can order to go with your salmon catch. Totally disability friendly too and worth a stop when you are in the bay for a bit of fun and dining. You are able to purchase pre caught salmon but we always like the added ability to catch ours if we wish too.

Recently visited. When we arrived, there were two staff members who clearly saw us and others waiting, but continued to sit and have their coffee. Took five minutes for anyone to help us.
Staff were not knowledgeable and did not give any tips/tricks to catch a fish and no discussion on how to kill a fish if caught.
We got our first bag of bait for free, but when we went up again, was told it was $3. When I explained that we got our last bag for free, the young lady said "it's $3 for everyone", which it clearly wasn't.
When we ordered from the cafe afterwards, half of our order was forgotten about.
We decided to give it another shot the next day. We were told that there was no bait and only salmon, however when we went down, others had bait. Fish weren't interested in the salmon as bait at all. There seems to be inconsistence with how customers get treated and the staff's attitude and knowledge is shocking. Would not recommend.

We thought we would stop by after a day out exploring Golden Bay and decide when to come back but the temptation of joining the excitement of other families hooking their dinner was just too great. My daughter (12) hooked hers within the first 5 minutes of dropping her line in and before we knew it my son had his one the line too. We had one smoked and the other filleted. Enough for 3 meals for 4 of us. It was close to closing time when we caught ours and I think as a result our smoked salmon wasn’t as well smoked as I thought it should be. Nonetheless it was still good value for money with a slice of entertainment added!
